calling any one from missouri

pips&peeps :

This is from the State NPIP Director here in WA State. I thought you guys should be aware:

Low pathogenic avian influenza H7N3 was detected in Missouri (Polk County) commercial turkeys as part of the NPIP routine surveillance. No clinical signs of sickness or disease was evident in the turkeys. Low pathogenicity H7 avian influenza virus raises concerns due to the risk of mutating to the highly pathogenic form as occurred in the British Columbia AI H7N3 outbreak in 2004. Washington State lies beneath the Pacific America flyway for migrating waterfowl. It is important to maintain biosecurity to prevent the spread of avian influenza from migrating waterfowl to domestic poultry.

Thank you pips&peeps....sure sounds scary.

This does sound scary... I wonder what to do... Most of my chicks came from NPIP providers and the ones who weren't came from a hatchery the year before I got them... Is it really possible that my chickens would have a disease since they all came from NPIP flocks...???

I sure hate the idea of the government being in the middle of my farm. I don't trust the American Department of Ag...

Wasn't the world supposed to end when the bird flu went around about 6-8 years ago?

No offense to anybody, but it seems that every other month there is another outbreak that is supposed to kill off half of the population.

Urban, I don't think you need to DO anything but be aware of the situation. Jean is a highly respected breeder and was making sure that people are aware.

Being NPIP does not mean that the birds are totally disease free. The NPIP testing is only for one or two main diseases. Do a search on BYC for NPIP and you can get details of what exactly it means.

For anyone who does not know Polk County is in the SW area of Missouri and includes the town of Bolivar.

WOW.... This is my first time hearing this.

Thanks pips&peeps for bringing this to my attention !

I guess I'm going to Jacob's Cave Saturday morning... I think I'll look for silkies or maybe buffs... both are good broodies right? I think i'd like to start harching out using a hen. Not tried either way so should be interesting!

See you all there! I hope...

Tony- We have a buff cochin we bought from Orschelns 2 years ago. She is the last of my original birds. She is sweet and quite a talker. We really had no idea what she was for quite a long time. But boy does she really want to set. I figure there is no cost involved and I don't even know for sure that the eggs she is sitting on are fertile. We just gathered up some bantie eggs and gave them to her. Oh well, it makes her happy. Cochins are on my wish list for Jacob's Cave. I like the Patridge and the Blue.

I am ready for some warmer weather. Anyone else?
