calling any one from missouri

maybe you should. Then all those chicken runs and exotic vacations where you just happen to talk chickens will all be tax deductible biz expenses...LOL!

Vacation? What is this word you speak of?

I wasn't much of vacationer before chickens and now I have an excuse to stay home. The rare times I want to go away for the weekend with the family I try to get everything set up and then hope for the best since they aren't getting locked up at night. Occassionally, I do a scrapbooking weekend, but I try to make sure a family member is still home to gather eggs, and open/shut the chickens (again, I've filled feed and water to last the weekend).

We are trying to start a side business on our farm in the shape of an orchard and berry arbor.

Our accountant keeps asking us when it is going to start making money for us.

The last time she asked that I just snorted a response. Let's see. Late frost and freeze took out half of my pear blossoms and 90% of the apple blossoms. The horribly cold winter froze off my juvenile black berries at the ground so the canes that were going to produce berries last year had to start over and re-sprout from the roots. I should have gotten about 20 quarts or more of berries....I got 2. Trees are only a year old they won't start peak production until they are three....

I told her the old saying was right. Mother nature is a bee-otch. A cold hearted one at that.

That's why the chickens are going to officially be classified as a 'hobby'. It gets too complicated if I try to explain that they are going to help control bugs in the arbor and orchard as well as produce eggs for us.

Poor accountant would be scratching their heads and saying, well, if you bought them as farm equipment to work the orchard....Here, fill out this form as well as the rest of them.

Not going to go there.

The only thing I miss about breeding chickens is the travel. I used to avail myself of mini vacations of 3 or 4 days to maxi vacations of months. It really irks the wife.
I guess I might still be able to do the minis but the foreign trips aren't in the picture for the time being.

i am tempted.....livestock guard puppies on craigs list

I would love an LGD or Aussie but trying to find one close enough that has the background has been difficult.
Hubby contacted one in IL. she was more interested in selling the dog then making sure it would be a good fit.
Another I found will not have an available dog until 2016. So, right now it looks as though 2016 will be the earliest
I will be able to get a partly trained farm dog. I'm not happy about this but I have exhausted the avenues looking for
a dog the last two years. I did look at the ones on craigslist and yes it is tempting but they do not come out and say
the dogs have actually been trained or will be in any way just that the parents are.

Ann Creswell Bledsoe on FB https://www.facebook.com/ann.creswellbledsoe you might talk to, has pups Lake area. There are a couple FB pages dedicated to LGD that may also be able to help you find what you are looking for.

Thank you for the info. I contacted Ann today and she seems very sweet. I felt no pressure and found out a little of how well she knows her dogs. She even told me she has a female that likes to scatter chickens. She will not be letting the female go until she has solved the problem with more training. Now that is the kind of person that is more concerned with the dog being handled correctly then the money behind it. She also said she would be available after I've brought a dog home to help with training tips and any questions I have. So far this is looking pretty darn good. Hubby and I are driving over tomorrow to see the three pups she has left. Two are males and the one female. I know hubby is planning on a female so after we get a chance to meet the pups we will figure out which one will work best. If it is the female we will be waiting until she is available. I think the pyre is going to make an awesome fit here.
So, tomorrow it will be a 4 hour round trip to visit these beautiful pups. Hmm I wonder if there are

along the way. lol
