calling any one from missouri

Seligman, Missouri here! This morning, I did a head count. Today, I have 23 laying hens (a wide variety of barnyard girls, 2 Dominiquers, a Silky, and a rooster of the barnyard variety, 5 White Pekins, 1 Rouen, an African male goose, and a beautiful Domestic Hen. Plus. Reggie The Dog, and Supper The Hog (sow, getting ready for the butcher). It is never a bad day to find a layer, especially the loud variety. I'm a sucker for the loud ones. In closing, can anyone explain why people say "no" to the eggs I offer? I'm not the only person who has exoperienced what I would call a strange phenomemon. People really are the strangest humans, you know.

Hello! Welcome to the thread!

Where is Seligman?

People say no to your eggs? What is WRONG with them. I don't think I could control my eye twitch if someone rejected the sweet love gifts my amazing little layers lay. Especially I'd offered them for FREE!

Lmao

Agreed! I read that and went 'HUH?' I usually wind up giving away my extra eggs to the Garbage man, the ladies in the Post Office, the guys in the local hardware store, etc and the love them.

I decided that this summer when I seem to be deluged in eggs, I'm going to try my hand at drying and freezing some excess so I have eggs for baking over the winter months. Right now I'm getting the grand sum of 1 egg a day from my BO/Welsummer cross pullet that started laying in Sept. The rest are freeloading thanks to their first molt. I have three more pullet that are at POL in December so I'm keeping light on them till 6 PM hoping they will start laying instead of waiting till spring.

I saw one of my 20 month old roosters dance for the girls the other day. He is still missing half his tail feathers but at least he is starting to show an interest in the girls again.

hi neighbor :) I'm in Powell, not too far away. Idk why anyone wouldn't take your eggs unless they have family with commercial laying houses, there are a lot in the area and I know that I get more free eggs than I can count from family with commercial houses

@bulletsSeligman is in Barry county/ like an hour SE of joplin

Ah okay great thanks!

I'm in camdenton. Seems like everyone is either in KC or southern MO. I'm smack dab in the middle so it's not feasible to travel hours away to visit my BYC neighbors with a full time job and 3 children, and and husband.

Why can't anyone live near me?

Same here Bullets. I'm in Macon county up in the northeastern corner of the state. I only know of one BYC member that is near me and I know but that is it. Makes me realize just how big of a state Missouri is.

We measure distances by hours travelled....2 hrs. to KC, ( 3 to MCI airport) 1 1/2 to Springfield, 3/4 hr. to Joplin, 2 1/2 to Sedalia, 3 hrs. to Tulsa....and that's about as far as we ever go by car.

Wondering, does anyone here ever take their birds to auction? I've never attended a livestock auction outside of the single cattle auction I went to about 15 years ago with my grandpa. I put some Bantam Cochins on CL and all my FB pultry sale groups. No takers. I know it sill be better in the spring though I've been wondering about auction houses. What has been your experience? Any recommendations?

You can take them to a local poultry swap. That is what I do with extra cockerels, but most sell for meat. I have sold a few for breeding. I just never bring anything I take back home to avoid exposure.
