Greetings dear readers,
We both grew up with chickens but haven't had them since we moved out.
We were supporting our local egg suppliers but when they took advantage of fear based pricing we (instead of shaming them) decided to get the message and start our own flock.
We are being the change we wish to see in the world. By providing cheap or free eggs (have a green queen from meyers) we will bring healthy food to the community. Our 30 acres here in the U.P. Michigan will provide plenty of foraging during the green season making up for feed costs in the winter.
We have currently 24 Bresse chickens (calling them american bresse just because we aren't on French dirt is ridiculous so we call them bresse or French bresse...they get the same treatment/diet so close enough!) Keeping the breeding pair from this bunch and starting a program focused on meat and SOP. Culling day is less than two weeks away and they are already big enough to eat.
We also have 20 White Rock chicks for the same purpose as the Bresse birds. If we decide to cross them it will be for improving the egg production in the Bresse. Originally started our group with meyers white rocks but the slave mail system failed us and more than half died during and after shipping...will never do that again. (Not the fault of the hatchery)
We found a local breeder and picked up 24 more white rocks to hatch of which produced 12 more making 20 for the breed.
We also have Red New Hampshire...French Black Copper Marans...a Green Queen...and a BYM Easter Egger.
Our first muscovy hatch just finished with 10 beautiful ducklings.
Grand Total...54 chickens and 10 ducks.
We look forward to the security and health raising our own food provides...these birds will grow up as nature intended. No fear based decisions on this farm!
Our hobbies include fishing, foraging, gardening, and cannabis breeding.
My husband and I grew up in Michigan at both ends of the state. We met while he was in college and I was tending bar. We married in 2018 after we realized the culture instilled in us was killing us slowly and quit our corporate jobs, bought an rv, moved to Colorado and lived off grid for 6 years, saved money, bought land, then land with a house, now paying off the house and planning on one last move to Alaska.
Our Standard Poodle Raya is going to be 4y/o in July and makes us laugh every day. My husband is incredibly talented with skills peaking in math, sciences and engineering with a degree in business management and marketing. I am a skilled fixer. A first born of a homeschooled family in the upper peninsula michigan. We learned a long time ago that we do not subscribe to the rat race and life continues getting better and better ever sense.
We live and work together, having started multiple businesses for others we decided to start our own business in homesteading and agricultural restructuring programs. It was time to put us first and its the best decision we ever made.
We found this forum when we started our research in starting our own chicken program...found so much great community of people that we decided to stay.
We recently received our NPIP certification for conducting our own testing and will have hatching eggs, local chicks, pullets/cockerals, hens available from our farm in the near future. We will offer Bresse, White Rocks and when we can find a proper bloodline of White Cornish...those as well.
Ending with this...thank you for being here and being you. Spread the love and joy this world needs and if you or someone you know is selling a pure line of White Cornish Gamehens please let us know.
We are looking for 18-24 hatching eggs from a breeder specially centered on preserving the heritage breed.
(Pretty sure that's the gent in New York that goes by Cultivars on ebay...yes, yes we know, ebay is the bottom of the hatching internet but if he's what he says he is...we are happy...plus he's got them available right now instead of months from now. The birds need to be able to grow out some before winter hits)
Thank you for reading.
Have a blessed day!
The Mrs.
