"Camping Out" at the feed store

UMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, buy from a tested flock and go directly to a reputable breeder. Who wants to stand in line for hatchery chicks? Not me. Just my opinion though.

For those of us in surburbia, buying straight run chicks just isn't an option. Roosters are forbidden by my city's municipal code. As much as I would love to get straight run chicks from a breeder or hatch my own, it's out of the question.

So... hatchery chicks it is for me!

Right. Cannot have a rooster here for fear of raising objections from neighbors.

My plan is to get a few chicks this year and then if all goes well, I'll try the incubation approach for next year...(shhh- don't tell my husband!

the local feed store is my only option...

unless I want to buy a TON from a hatchery...and I don't...so if the same birds are ordered by the feedstore and I can get smaller quanity, great, I'll stand in line to get'm

There is a huge movement in the states now to grow your own gardens (getting rid of lawns as landscape, replacing with edible gardens) and getting chickens, goats for milk, etc...soo the hatcheries and feedstores are selling more chickens then ever....(even prez bama changed part of the white house lawn into garden to be 'part of the movement') I think people just want to be less dependent on others for their basic needs.

one of my feedstores, buys chickens and sells them first come first serve and another feedstore (about 45 minute drive for me) will hold them for 24 hours when they come in, so when the chicks arrive, they pluck out however many you want and puts them in a sold brooder...but you don't get to 'pick out' your chicks then...and I prefer to observe them a little and make sure they look healthy, alert, etc...before I take them home so the first come first serve worked out well for me.

My pet chicken will sell a smaller quantity of chicks so you don't have to buy a oodles of them. And I know that chicks are cute & all for the kids but you may also want to check with some reputable breeders or even just on craigs list etc. for people selling pullets as spring comes... Frankly I hatched out a whole bunch of eggs 3 weeks ago & I'm just waiting to see which look like Roos & which look like pullets & then at about 5 or 6 wks I'll sell off the excess accordingly. The people who will get any of the pullets from me will have laying hens most likely by Sept. And before I went & stood in line or waited in a parking lot I'd get a full order & split it with others...

i live in a place where i cant have roos either, i actually found a breeder and asked if they had any culls left adn thats what i got, they had crooked toes...doesnt harm the bird on bit and i got birds i know are pullets. he got rid of birds that where useless and i got beautiful birds that i know the source of
