Can’t see air bubble very well

Very certain it’s a aquarium thermometer and it’s digital and I put it on top of the layer of paper towel
Did you calibrate your thermometer? Sometimes they can be off.

This is a very cool experiment! Maybe add a small dish of water, use a plate or something that the water will spread over in a think layer so it can evaporate quickly. That should give you added humidity. Are you allowed to use a humidity gauge? I would get one if you can, though it may not be as important anymore.

Lastly, if this little guy hatches, you should really look into getting him a friend from a feed store. I would start looking now. They are very social animals, and don't do well without another quail. The other quail should also be a hatchling and within the 1-4 day old range.

can you do a photo so folks can offer tips for lockdown and hatching? The weight of the rice is not on the eggs is it? Bowls/jars of hot water on each side of your hatcher may help with humidity and heat. GL!

I calibrate it using my fish tank since it’s heated to exactly 78 degrees and I also have a thermometer that you point at it and it gives exact temp
For friends I bought 4 more eggs in hopes atleast one or two hatch out of those 4

My the time the next ones hatch, this little guy will be older, and my reject the new hatchlings. Its best to find him at lest one, buddy from a feed store in the mean time.

That isn't really good enough for hatching. Even the best $1000 infrared thermometers are only accurate to ±2% of reading or 4°F, whichever is greater. 4F high or low isn't enough for reliable hatching.
What you are doing is very interesting and honorable but to discount the advice of the extremely experienced hatchers here may not be the best course of action. Thermostats, like those on aquariums are no more reliably accurate than mid range thermometers.
I wish you lots of success but just know that after high end and cheap incubators as well as DIY cabinets, countless controllers, thermostats, thermometers and hygrometers- I know that nothing is reliable out of the box.

Yes I hope too maybe if I contact the breeder she has one of similar age. If not I will check the feed store. Quick Q is it normal for when I candles him today and turned the egg the whole embryo seemed to turn.

I know the temp isn’t best but for this one egg he was in my bra for most of the time and only in the homemade incubater when I was at home and could monitor exact temps. I already got the grade for the assignment. I am very happy I have a almost full term egg. U really hope he hatches but if I where to ever incubate eggs again after this I will definitely buy a incubater

So I float tested him today.... is it normal for a 13 day old egg to be verticals on the bottom?

I think I saw it move a bit in the water but I’m not sure. I hope my humidity isn’t too high or the chick is dead :(
