So yesterday we think my baby shadow was attacked by something. We found her in the corner one eye closed, dried blood all over and just standing motionless. She has a lot of missing/ broken feathers. We brought her inside the garage and broke out the old brooder where she spent the night still standing motionless. We have her on a diet of water with vitamins and applesauce. (which she is loving btw) she didn't eat or drink anything unless we were standing there holding it up to her beak. (She then willingly ate and drank). The reason we think she is eggbound is because she is showing all of the signs. She is not moving, has her tail lowered and has her eyes shut most of the time. We have given her a hot bath with epsilon salt and given her a massage but did not feel any egg. She has started becoming more mobile and is drinking on her own now but her left eye has still never opened and her right is shut most of the time. When her eye is open it is red and watery. Could an animal attack have caused this? Was she attacked and is eggbound? What should i do? I will attach photos. She now just has her face buried in her fluff of her neck.
Was she in an enclosed run, or free ranging? Was she with other birds? Did you check her entire body over for any hidden wounds, where did the blood come from? In the last picture there is gunk on her beak, is that food, or does she have discharge from her nares? Trying to determine if she was attacked by a predator or attacked by the flock. A sick bird will often be attacked by the flock. How old is she? Do you know when she last laid? What do her droppings look like? I would flush the eye out with sterile saline or eyewash and get a good look. It may be injured or have debris in it. You can use plain neosporin or terramycin eye ointment (Tractor Supply and some feed stores carry) in the eye twice a day. Pictures of any wounds would be helpful. Check her crop, is it empty, full, hard, soft and squishy? It should be empty first thing in the morning before she eats or drinks. Does her abdomen feel bloated between the legs below the vent, very hard, or water balloon like? If you can provide answers to these (you may get more questions) hopefully it can get narrowed down a bit.
