can a coon actually tear through new chicken wire????

If it were intended to contain raccoons it'd be called raccoon wire.

The coon I caught was darn strong.Teeth and clawed paws. I had a hard time with it.

when you fasten the end of the roll of hardware cloth it is a good thing to nail a board on top of the end of the roll if coon can get their paws behind the wire it stands a good chance of pulling the wire off

thank all of you, for your replies. you have convinced me to reinforce my yard roof. probably the easiest way to do this would be to add some galvanized tin over that area. i actually don't give coons TOO much thought as i have a 110# dog that roams around at night, and regularly kills armadillos, possums, and i've found several 1/2 grown coons dead in the yard. i already knew to beef up the bottom 3'-4' feet of the yard, so i am GTG there. thanks again, and maybe this will help others. there is not any substitute for experience, so we all can learn from others.

Chicken wire is for keeping chickens out of areas (e.g. gardens) and not for keeping predators away from chickens. It's just not sturdy enough on it's own to stand up to a determined predator. Larger animals will chew/claw through it, smaller animals (like coons) can reach through it and tear whatever portion of the chicken they grab out through it.

I think it was Tala that had some real good pictures, though I think hers was from dogs and not raccoons. In some places they actually tore it. In some, it looked more like the wire untwisted. The connections with chicken wire are formed by twisting, not welding.
