Can an old foot injury make your chicken more prone to frost bite? (Photos)

excellent! its in working order so just a matter of flesh healing. from all ive read, chickens are good healers. hopefully just needs time. obviously you'll try to keep it clean and avoid exteme cold , not easy with your weather i know but itll be sensitive for sometime i would imagine. youve done such an excellent job with him. im so impressed :) and they have a lovely fluffy run to escape the harse outdoors :) his a very lucky chicken. xx

Left the bandage off for little over a day. Brought Roger up for Maintenance and things were looking a little different again. I thought at first it looked worse for the wear. But I collected my thoughts on it a bit. I think he is just sloughing off deadish tissue and underneath here is the red new tissue granulating in. He just did it a little faster with the bandage off. I did epsom soak on him as long as he would allow and reapplied a topical penicillin and non stick dressing and vet wrap. Maybe it will keep the area soft so the granulating tissue can work and progress alot easier. I think he might lose that toenail. What do you all think? It doesn't have the color in it that the others do. Just my thoughts.

i think thats looking really good. swelling hasnt started up again and colour looks good to me nice and pink underneath looks like the dead tissue is coming away giving way to good healthy new tissue. i did wonder from the last pic you posted before this one if he would loose that nail. it looks quite grey which usually indicates that the nail bed has died but its hard to tell as you cant get a good look at its base. can you see any pinkness at the very base of the nail? i think he may loose that nail but you never know. the toe seems still slightly swollen at the nail so once thats healed the blood may flow into the nail more easily could be it still has blood supply but so little we cant see.but may be enough to keep it alive. time will tell. of course just my opinion. im no expert! the healthy new tissue appears very close to the nail thou so i think that a good sign.xx

The claw might grow in over time, but it might be indicative of severe damage to the inside of this digit, which might need to be removed at some point. Again? Just somethin' to look into, just in case it's req'd (you wanna be ahead in your studies of the issues that might arise )-;~

Not the best graphic, but it gives you some idea of the number of joints. You might be able to remove the offending digit, but leave enough tissue to close the foot at the previous joint ... gruesome as this sounds, it might become his last chance for recovery, if things get worst.

And, I'm not sayin' they will ... just that they could, and if they do ... be prepared.

Thank you Cowcreek Geek. As always good stuff to know. I've considered given the color of that nail and the continued "largeness" of that first joint that there could be a need for partial amputation of that toe. It seems viable in color of underlying tissue though, and in use. I will update tomorrow with photos on how it looks. As he has not had a bandage on for 2-3 days and you can really see what was underneath the sloughing yellow skin now. I am heartened by the redish color and the fact that the new stuff underneath has outlines of new scales in the making. Not sure if the toe was Jammed or broken though at that joint. Almost seems like it. It may become a bit of a deformity but with a blood flow....?

I did bank up my coop with snow tonight for insulation. Thursday and Friday and maybe Saturday with some -7 and -10 degree lows coming our way.

Made it look like an igloo. Will make necessary adjustments to my heat lamp as you suggested too before I turn it back on tomorrow night. Too many coop fires on this forum lately with good experienced chicken people too. So sad.

Bag Balm to protect from the cold. He probably has reduced circulation and arthritis from the original injury. If its going to be cold out, bag balm the toe, its like a gooey glove and the colder it is out, the better it stays on. Slather it on. It can't hurt the infection and it will soften the tissue like A&D ointment while keeping heat against the toe.

wow that toes looking really good! :)
i love the snow idea! you coop looks so pretty with all the snow! seeing what you have to deal with i dont think ill moan about english weather anymore! :/ lol
