can any identify if this hamburg chick is a roo or hen??

This pic concerns me as there are tail feathers either side drooping which makes me start to think this one could be a roo??

You're right. He's a handsome boy. Will you be keeping him or are you in an area where roos aren't allowed? What's his disposition like? Hamburgs aren't too common so hopefully he can be part of a breeding program.

If there was someone wanting him within WA, we would gladly give him to them for nothing! But I'm not sure if there are many people interested..

A friend of mine lost some of her chooks and may want a roo, but she might also not :(

You may be able find someone on here from WA who would be interested or willing to drive if they're out of state. Did you get him from a breeder? If so, I wonder if they'd be willing to trade or would know of someone willing/able to take a roo if your friend isn't interested. I don't know about your boy but my girl doesn't like intruders AT ALL. She's fine with the rest of the flock, my children, dog, cat and me but wild birds, chipmunks, squirrels and anything else is fair game to her. I love watching her go bowling for robins. The only intruders she won't challenge are the neighbors' dogs because she's learned from the flock elders that the only dog to be trusted is ours but she will call the warnings to the others when she sees them. She's quite the little "watch dog" herself and having her around makes me feel a bit more at ease when letting them free-range. I won't let them range if I'm not home but I don't feel as though I have to be watching every single second they're out. If yours is similar you may not have a hard time rehoming him at all.

From what I've read and have been told the hamburgs are quick to mature. I'm now seeing how off that is and how the differences between genders are far more subtle in them than they are in other breeds.

Unfortunately I doubt someone would drive from out of WA as Australia is a big country. Coming from Out of WA means a day plus drive ahahaha.

Unfortunately I didn't get him from a very reputable breeder. While they did say they take roos back? They only find homes again if friendly and this guy is a bit of a scaredy :(

I'll be asking my friend at work today :)

Were you able to find him a new home?

A lady I work with is going to take him to go with her white wyandotte bantams.. We just hope he won't be too big for them...

Oh that's great news! I'm glad you've found him a home. Yes, hopefully he won't be too big for them but at least Hamburgs stay small.
