Can anyone identify this animal track? I have not been able to figure out what it belongs to. It's

The sandy soil could easily account for the size seeming too big for a cougar and honestly cougar was my first thought. You could try making a wet muddy clay mixture and pouring it around the area you found the track and maybe the animal will step in that to give you a better track.

I've done something similar to identify what was going into my foaling stall at night.

Maybe a large-ish bird that landed and caused the sand to spread a bit?

Is there only one print?

Sand is kinda hard to track stuff on if there's a lot of wind or recent rain since details tend to wash away easier. But if there's neither of those elements, try and lay out some sand to see if you can capture more prints.

If it was a "cat" type animal, the rear/palm area has 3 very distinct "bumps" like this below. (These were mountain lion tracks I found on a pig hunt last month in the Ventanas of California).
