Can Baby Chickens Breathe inside Incubator

Hi all,

It is day 21, and three of my eggs are hatched; however, I wonder if they have enough oxygen to breathe inside the incubator. Right now, both red vent plugs are still plugged in. Do I need to remove these plugs to get enough oxygen for them to breathe?

I think I read that you need to remove at least one plug after they hatch.

Thanks for your reply. I'll remove one right now. And the humidity reading is 74%, I hope it is OK.

Found the paragraph!

HATCHING: Once the eggs begin to hatch, humidity will naturally rise but don't open the incubator! Open 2nd red top vent plug. Wait until the majority of the eggs have hatched and dried before removing chicks, and then do it quickly, without disturbing the incubator & the remaining eggs. Pipping, can take up to 6 hrs for the chick to fully emerge, and a another 6 hrs for it to dry, fluff and begin to move around. Since the chicks have reserves of yolk to draw on, they don’t need to eat or drink for the first 24 hours after hatching and can be left in the incubator until the stragglers have had a chance to hatch.

I am so excited. Twelve out of 41 were hatched so far. This morning, I removed both plugs since the humidity went up to 80%. (Last night, I removed only one plug) I still have another 24 hours since first chicken was hatched Monday morning. Thank you all for your replies! I'll keep you posted.

I got 30 chickens out of 41 eggs, so the rate is 75%. It is good for first time hatching, but I still need to improve. I heard that success rate for dry hatching could be 90% or more. Thank you all for your help!!!!!!!
