Can chickens be anemic?

We just lost one chicken that became weaker and weaker and her comb got lighter in color. She died and now we have another one that is showing signs of her comb getting lighter in color and I would like to do what I can to make her better.
Three years ago we got 6 baby chicks from Tractor Supply and lost one last year; another two months ago and now the third with this problem. I still have a 7-year old from my first batch and a 6-year old from the second bath. These 3-year olds are my third batch and something is taking them out at a rather young age.
We are in North Florida; they are free ranging; are fed Purina feed, have oyster shell available and are given vegetables, fruits and sunflower seeds as treats. We also hang a cabbage for them to peck out once a week.
Egg laying has stopped for the last 7-8 weeks except that the 6-year old Ameraucana has starting laying an egg every other day this week....three cheers for the old timer!
If there is an iron deficiency, should I feed grits.....they were prescribed for my St. Bernard when he was anemic?
I worm monthly and give vitamins less often.

Great idea; I usually give them a mixture of canned dog food, yogurt, cottage cheese and apple sauce once or twice a week. I will do it more often and see if that helps. Will also check to see if they have any blood sucker signs. Thanks so much for your help.
