Can chickens give coccidiosis to dogs?

There seems to be a little confusion on this board. Cocci and coccidia are two separate organisms. Cocci are any type of spherical bacterium like Staphylococcus or Streptococcus bacteria. Coccidia are a type of single-celled protozoal parasites more similar to Cryptosporidium and Giardia. There are many species of coccidia that infect the intestinal tracts of animals and all species appear to be host-specific. Cats have species of Isospora, Besnoitia, Toxoplasma, Hammondia, and Sarcocystis. Dogs have species of Isospora, Hammondia, and Sarcocystis. Neither dogs nor cats have Eimeria which are the species that we find in poultry, ruminants, etc. You will occasionally find Eimeria in the fecal samples of cats and dogs but they are non-pathogenic and do not cause any issues or require treatment.

I agree with the people here that day that dogs cannot get chicken or goat coccidia, as it is species specific. We havedogs, chickens and goats all sharing the same pasture .It would be a nightmare to try to keep it poop free with all the poop in going on. We do clean up after the dogs and keep our pens and coop as clean as possible and use lime on the floors. Coccidia can live for years in the soil so don't drive yourself nuts!
