Can chickens hatch their first laid egg?

Good luck with your eggs! I hope they all hatch.

Just an update, EE chick is hatched but I'm alittle concerned about it. Not moving alot, not chirping...one of the other eggs hatched a few hours after the EE and its up, chirping rolling eggs etc... Will wait a few hours and see what happens, another EE egg has pipped

As long as he pushed himself out of the egg, I wouldn't worry too much. Keep in mind that these little tiny creatures just broke and pushed themselves out of a substance that even we can't always break correctly. I don't know about you, but I tend to hit an egg against a surface too softly a few times before it actually cracks!

Typically a chick will sleep after every single phase of hatching. Obviously, the last part is the most exhausting, so it's not surprising that he isn't moving. He's tired! If anything, I'd be more concerned about the one that is moving!

But really, it's like human babies. Some of them cry a lot. Some hardly cry at all. He's alive, fully hatched on his own, and you didn't mention any deformities, so I'm sure he'll be just fine.

after they hatch they rest. I had a whole group hatch once and they didn't move much and I was worried then suddenly they all started scooting around then running around it was neat. it just takes time.

Thanks guys, but seriously, looking at it, it doesnt even look like it was supposed to hatch, its eye's are still shut and very large!! I've got it under a heat lamp because the other chicks were pecking at it, going to give it the evening and see how it is tomorrow.

Good News!!! woke up this morning and the little EE is doing fine, up and running around, put it with the other chicks and it snuggled right in...2 more of the EE's hatched overnight with a 3rd starting to zip as I speak...

The third one isnt doing too well, we have kept it in the incubator all day, The humidity jumped up and when it hatched it was covered in a thick goo, I watched it hatch but then had to leave, I didnt realize it was in danger... when I returned a few hours later it didnt look like it had dried off at all, so I quickly opened the bator only to discover it was stuck to shells and the matt, poor thing, I left it for a sec to get some warm water and a soft tooth brush and a warm towel, came back and did the best I could and it has fluffed out alot but it isnt standing yet.. Going to wait til the other three eggs hatch and then try and give it some sugar water. it is peeping so hopefully it just needs a good rest and warmth

Ok, so took baby out and brushed it again with a soft tooth brush, he just sat there then gave him a bit of sugar water, put him with the other cheeps and he is doing alot better, still not walking as well as they are but I am confident he will be ok..

My humble opinion..
I wont try to hatch a pullets small eggs again, 3 out of 5 has struggled and we have had to give it extra attention. They are smaller in size and just dont seem to be as strong... Maybe waiting til the hen has been laying for atleast 6 months or so may be better as the eggs might be a bigger egg... I want my flock to have every advantage possible and these tiny eggs just seem to hinder that advantage.
