Can diamond doves from a pet store be tamed?

I used to work at a Petsmart, the rumor about animal mills is just that, a rumor. Petsmart gets their birds and lizards from reputable breeders. Depending on where you live, if you have good breeders to get your birds from, chances are they also breed for Petsmart. The doves we always got in at Petsmart were easily stressed though. The dogs walking by and barking, all the people peering in at them and the kids smacking the cages as they go by, make for very stressed out birds. A local breeder might be best just because of that. At the Petsmart I worked at, all of our doves died from stress within a month of getting them. That was confirmed by an avian vet every time. So the store stopped getting them in. They don't want to stress the birds out.

Petsmart birds are bought from wholesalers who may get their birds from a variety of sources, but local breeders are not one of them because store policy prohibits buying animals locally (as a reputable breeder myself, I was told they only receive birds from an approved distributor who in turn works only with approved breeders) Most birds at these distributors come from large scale mill operations, especially budgies and finches, while some finches are imported wild-caught (moreso a few years ago and less now).

What they call "approved breeders" are ultimately mill operations that breed tens of thousands of birds a year in small cages on impoverished diets, which are licensed to Petsmart. They don't take birds from any other breeders, and ethical breeders probably would not sell to Petsmart. The major bird suppliers to Petsmart are Sunpet ltd in Atlanta, Georgia and Blue Ribbon Pet Farm in Miami. Sunpet is worse than Blue Ribbon but ultimately, both are mill operations. Birds are bred to exhaustion and either sold off to the stores when they can breed no more, or culled, depending on if they still look saleable. These old birds often die in a few months after being shipped to the store.

Oh wow, that is sad! They must be delicate birds! But I can totally understand, everytime I go to petsmart there are always big dogs barking and little kids running around, so yes that could definitely stress the doves out. The doves at the petsmart where I live seem very healthy - they don't look at all like they came from an animal mill. They also have green cheek conures who are very active and friendly towards people - again it is strange to think those birds came from some crusty mill. Thank you for sharing!

that is very sad and disturbing. I know PETA has some videos about the suppliers for petco animals but I wasn't sure how accurate those videos were, but they were very disturbing, have you ever seen those videos?

Yes you probably are :( But wouldn't you also be allergic to diamond doves?

actually the weird thing is no, I have had diamonds in the past and they never bothered me at all, but the ringneck doves bothered my lungs - something about their dust, they are bigger and dustier than the diamonds. I don't understand it but I know I can't own ringnecks because of it.

Ok! Hay, the most reliable way to find out is thru experience!
