That's probably because Moony based his avvy on Sam, lol. He blames me for it.Sorry Sam, looks a little to much like @The Moonshiner avatar…
Broodies shouldn't lay (some do but it should taper off as they sit). She hasn't laid an egg since this all started. How long did you say to keep her in broody jail?
Hahaha I like the label. Adds a nice touchThanks.
I bought the stuff and started using it yesterday afternoon. I forgot to add the mesh bottom and couldn't do it after the fact. It was up on 2x4s so her feet were down on the ground. So I gave up and put the plastic floor tray back in. I also added a 2x2 roost that goes the width of the jail. I thought I was so clever with the wall mounted food and water dishes, but she immediately turned them and spilled everything out so she couldn't get to them.(Before I added they floor, so they were on the ground).
Today I cleaned it up while I let her out to eat breakfast with the other girls. I blocked off all the next boxes, and she did act normally for a couple of hours. I got two eggs from the others by putting them in the next boxes that were blocked off from the outside. They had all stopped laying (one day) because of her nest hogging behavior. This time I put blocks under the food and water dishes and then attached them to the sides of the crate, and used pliers to tighten. Hopefully it will prevent her from dumping them. I don't know if she'll figure out the water bottle.
I was able to leave her out most of the morning while I cleaned up. Then I saw her digging a nest in the poopiest part of the run, and stuck her back in the nice clean jail and opened the nest boxes up to the other 3.
Some broodies can be weird about eating and drinking, it's why I generally let them out for short supervised outings twice a day.Well, she somehow did the same thing, spilled all the food and pooped in the water. I don't think she has used the water bottle, even though she can see there is ice in it. I know she eats in the morning, but I haven't seen her drink.
Do you have a small fan you can turn on her? I’m reluctant to do it when they’re in a cage, because they can’t get away from it, although I’ve used it in a nesting box.Well, she somehow did the same thing, spilled all the food and pooped in the water. I don't think she has used the water bottle, even though she can see there is ice in it. I know she eats in the morning, but I haven't seen her drink. It's about 102 degrees out there. She's panting and puffing herself out while watching the other 3 guzzle ice water from a pie tin. There is a fancy new stainless steel automatic watering unit out there, but none of them have discovered it yet. Finally I gave up and brought her inside. I forced a few turkey basters of water down her throat and put her in here in the big crate until I see her drink.
