can I feed a coturnix pheasant feed?

Byquails...you've had birds how long? and how many have you raised over the years?...Sometimes it's OK to listen and learn, not comment if you're not sure...especially if you're going to give bad advice that will effect the health of somebody Else's birds, IMO.

Grower IS higher in fat and sodium...both are quail killers! Quail are a high metabolism bird that most people keep in a 24 inch x 36 inch cage...that in itself is OK, but the birds have no room to work off that extra fat content, added with high salt intake, you are going to decrease egg production, fertility, and depending upon the amount will lead to death.

I'm not trying to pick on you, please don't look at this as a personnel attack. When people do get on the forum and ask questions, they need a honest answer because the advice given here is implemented in People's flocks and can have serious consequences. I'm just asking you to please think about what you are posting.

BoutrosBoutrosGalusGalus, Game bird starter crumbles that have at least 24% protein is good, 28% is better. As long as it is a crumble form it should be fine. GBS from hatch to dispatch. No grower. Look in the stickies for other recommended treats or supplements.

Good luck with your flock.

Feed your birds what you want, all in all you will do what you want to do. You asked for their opinions and they shared them with you. These guys know what they are doing, most have been breeding birds for years and years and know what works well, that is the beauty of a forum, you will get those people who have raised birds for a long time and know what they have learned and you will get some people who just started raising birds or who in some cases dont even own birds and think they know whats best. Forums are for everyone, what you choose to take away from it is the final answer and if you have a friend that is doing something that works then do that, we will just tell you what works for us because you ask.

I would do what Bfrancis says every time, he has quality stock, good hatching eggs, and a beautiful setup with healthy birds.

I get pheasant feed for my ducks for the protein. Will it work for quail too?

WHAT TYPE OF PHEASANT FEED? THERE ARE MANY TO CHOOSE FROM IN VARYING NUTRITIONAL LEVELS... FOR THE MOST PART HERE IN THE STATES COMMERCIALLY MADE FEED FOR PHEASANTS IS "GAME BIRD FOOD" AND IF IT IS NUTRITIONALLY SOUND FOR PHEASANTS IT WILL SUPPLY QUAIL AS WELL.... THE PROBLEM IS "WHAT FORMULA?" AS IT COMES IN A MYRAID OF FORMULAS FROM A 16% MAINTENANCE ALL THE WAY UP TO A 30% STARTER. ALSO BE WARY OF MEDICATED FEEDS... IN PARTICULAR IF YOUR FEED IS TRUELY A PHEASANT SPECIFIC FORMULA THAT IS MEDICATED YOUR COTURNIX COULD QUITE EASILY CONSUME ENOUGH FEED TO MAKE THIS MEDICATION TOXIC OR HARMFUL

Alright thanks for all the replies everyone.

Looking at my pheasant feed label it is;

%28 prot
%4 fat
%6 fiber
%1-1.4 calcium
1220 kcal/lb

I was going to supplement with some meal worms since they are an insectivores but will I overload them on fat & protein?

Also is it safe to feed my chickens this? Too much protein isn't and issue it it?

LOOKS LIKE A STANDARD GAMEBIRD STARTER TYPE RATION, IF NOT MEDICATED IT SHOULD DO FINE FOR YOUR QUAIL. AS FOR CHICKENS? UM NO I WOULDNT... YOU CAN OVERLOAD CHICKENS WITH PROTIEN CAUSING ANYTHING FROM CURLED FEATHERS TO RENAL FAILURE AND DEATH. IF USING THIS FOR CHICKENS IT WOULD NEED TO BE DILUTED SUBSTANCIALLY WITH A LOWER PROTIEN FEED SOURCE LIKE SCRATCH GRAINS OR SIMILAR... MEAL WORNS ARE NOT NECESSARY THO THE BIRDS WILL RELISH THEM

I just read this whole thread and have question. I bought my quails at a pet store and the guy there told me to just crush up cat food to feed my quails. Will that work or do I need to find another food for my quailies? do I need to find bugs and stuff to feed them too?

Thanks a bunch!
