I have a skittish barnevleder who seems to be in the final stages of battling roundworm . Shes lost every bit of meat on her body and since shes not extraordinarily friendly she didnt let it be shown until it was too late. I have her separated in the house and last night I gave her 1/4 tsp of piperazine (as recommended for animals under 3 lbs) and today treated the entire flock with wazine.
Today I checked my barnie's stool (bright green/yellow diarhia) and found a roundworm, but not a huge massive amount. I am now still worried that there are still more in there and regretting not using the wazine on her.

She has not BMed since this morning. I have been force feeding her an egg yolk/yogurt/beef baby food mash every couple of hours. She is fading fast and I need to see these things LEAVING HER BODY. is it a terrible idea to give her a small dose of wazine or will that be too hard on her body?

Thanks!

OKay well I just checked on her again and we had a poo! It was mostly bright yellow liquid but there were small chunks in it and i THINK those small chunks may have been made up entirely of worms. I honestly cant be certain though because i do not know how obvious roundworms are supposed to look. They were long skinny translucent things that were sort of rubbery and broke apart pretty easily. I hope that is a good sign that they are getting flushed.

Dont double dose her with wazine. Reworm her again in 10 days with safeguard liquid goat wormer, 1/2cc orally undiluted. In the meantime get some probiotics in her; buttermilk (probiotic) mixed with scrambled eggs (extra protein.) Feed that to her for about 5 or 6 days.

Thanks Dawg! I was really hoping to see you pop into here! Phew!

Good, I need to keep my paws OFF the wazine.
I will definitey reworm in 10 days but I am honestly not sure she will make it that long. Shes got not meat left on her bones and when she exerts herself her head wobbles around. When she stands she loses balance very easily. She nods off when I am force feeding her. I am doing yogurt, baby food, and egg yolks. (a fair amount every 2-3 hours) Followed by a shot of poly vi sol for vitamins and water. Tomorrow I will buy some buttermilk and get her on that too.

Do you think the expulsion of the worms is a good sign? will she hopefully be getting the food that i am giving her now?

I think you're doing all you can for her. Wazine paralyzes worms. Once the worm releases from the intestinal wall, they are either absorbed as protein or excreted. The thing about wazine is that it only gets rid of large roundworms. Safeguard gets rid of most worms that chickens can get. I normally recommend valbazen, but safeguard is cheaper especially if you're only going to dose 1 bird. Continue to force feed her 4-5 times a day, be careful not to aspirate her when doing so. I hope she's not too far gone that she doesnt recover.

You might want to get a kitchen scale and start weighing her. Then you'll know if you're feeding her enough and/or if she's getting better or worse. And like dawg said, be careful not to aspirate her.

Thanks guys. Ill try to get my hands on some valbazen and use that for her and the rest of the flocks second dose of de-wromer a week from now. I think she just may make it that far. I was able to feed her some solid scrambled eggs and can actually feel her crop today.
Ill stop by a thrift store and pick up a little kitchen scale. Good suggestion

A chicken with a heavy wormload will eventually die from starvation. Not much will be excreted except mostly water, and of course possibly worms.
Also if there's a heavy wormload, most wormers will paralyze or kill many types of worms causing possible toxic worm overload in the chickens system...then the chicken will die. The only wormer that wont cause this is valbazen. Valbazen slowly kills worms over 2-5 day period of time.

We have a big, more substantially solid poop!
