Can I Maintain Grass In My Run ?

They are hard on grass when i built my pen i added to it 4 times until they had plenty of green stuff 21 chickens 4 guinnis 1/4 acre. but they have plenty of grass and bugs now and it saves on the feed.

I have a 12x48 run that had established grass for about 6 months. I have 10 chickens and the grass is all gone. Its a moon scape. I now wish I had just gone ahead and put in a foot of sand. We have clay, yuck. gloria Jean

There is no hope of grass if you have chickens confined to an area. The only good thing is that I never have to trim grass around my chicken fence. (I use a horse fence) They stick their heads through and strip it from the other side. If you are worried about the mud, try a ground cover plant they won't eat. I purposely put half of my chicken yard in an area that already had ground cover (Euonymus fortunei) They don't eat it and I'm not walking in mud.
