I have 4 week old blue/splash marans that I'd really like to move outside. First I'm sick of having chicks in the house. SEcond they are getting crowded in there and third, I have new eggs dut to hatch on Wednesday. (What was I thinking doing two hatches so quick??)

Anyway the high is in the 70's and lows in the 50's for the next 10 days. It's also going to be pretty rainy.

I put mine outside at 4 weeks but did leave the heat lamp out there for them. I also have them enclosed inside the coop with no access to the outer run yet. Too worried they will get out. I have noticed over the past week that they are spending a lot less time under the lamp but the first 4-5 days they stayed pretty close to it! HTH

I respectfully disagree. I have not had mine indoors since they were shipped to me. I had them in a brooder in our outdoor shop which has not heat. I kept a heat lamp on them and some mornings the temp in the brooder right under the lamp would only be about 80 and one time got down to 70. They faired just fine. They look feathered out enough to go outside but I would still stick a heatlamp out there for at least another month or so. The fluctuation in temp helps them adjust for later on down the road.

That's what I do.

Out at a few days old in the brooder, and they can come and go freely in and out of the brooder after 4-6 weeks old.

We were in the same boat - eight four and half week olds too crowded in the brooder. Poor things were on top of each other - flying out every time the wire came off the top and pooping everywhere. They would just stare at us through the sides and peep to get out. In desperation we sent them outside last night. Have to admit the whole family all kept sneaking out to the coop to check on them all night but they were happy as clams and happy all day today. They have been out all day for the past week - but in at night. Day time temps in 60's - night time 45. I am much happier without teenage chicks in the house and the chicks are much happier now!

No heat in the coop. Humph.

I don't feel like dealing with this. Maybe I'll sell them.
