I live in Zone 7 and have heard that I am supposed to start onions in the fall in my zone. Is this true? Cannot I grow them by starting in spring? The stores sell onion starts/sets in the spring, so I don’t see why I wouldn’t be supposed to start them in spring? Which varieties should I grow if staring in spring ?

Short answer is yes you can plant them in the spring.

I recommend starting with onion plants rather than onion sets (small bulbs).

Agree with OP.... half of the time I plant onions in the spring.... Somehow the fall planting just falls by the wayside
