Can I turn a shed into a coop?

How big is the shed? What does it have for flooring inside? How may chickens are you getting, and are you planning a run or going to free range? Keep an eye out in junk piles and construction waste for useful materials, lots of things can be scavenged or improvised on a budget. We have a coop that has the diamond shaped metal traction stuff instead of hardware cloth for ventilation.

I love coop build threads!!!

Welcome, I see no reason why that shed should not be able to be turned into a coop, for my chicken door in the new coop, I bought a chicken sized doggie door, has the little slide that I can close them off at night, depending on how many you plan on getting you should have more than enough room for nest boxes and roost's. I've read it's something like 1 nestbox per every 4 hens. and something like a ft to a ft and a half of roost room for each chicken.

That's going to make a great coop, and cute too. Start watching craigslist free section, sometimes dog runs come up, along with scrap wood or other supplies. Sometimes they are cheap in the for sale section also. Offer up and like apps can also be great resources for free or cheap. Watch for moving sales too, many times people ditch the dog run when they move. Consider a hoop style run also, that may be more affordable? Read the coop pages to see how others have done their sheds, and what is recommended for ventilation, roosts and nest boxes. Now it the time to educate yourself and collect supplies, so you can be ready for the remodel come spring. And of course, we love to see pics, and can advise, as you go along.

Thanks all!

Kris5902, I'm now sure how big it is. The flooring is wood. I'm planning to get 4 or 5 chickens, the number will move up as I get more experience. I'm am NOT doing free range so yes, I need a run. I will keep a good eye on junk piles.

It is a OLD shed. Not new AT ALL!

I was thinking about building one of these instead. Seems pretty easy, what do you think?

They are small......really small.

You have the shed so adding a run and roosts etc really wont take any longer or be much more costly than a tiny tractor.
I would convert the shed.
The birds would be much happier with more space.

Unless you think you may not want chickens long term.....

Looks like those rabbit hutches You see in the pet shop. Doesn’t look suitable for birds and I’ve read that they’re not good for rabbits either.
I’d stick with the shed idea
