can i use this as a heatign element.

Ok here is an idea that might make the new fangled bator a little more containable should you have problems. After you get the thing built and before you ever plug ANY PART of it in, construct a metal box that it will fit in. Put the bator in the metal box and ONLY THEN plug it in. If it melts or catches fire it will be contained within the metal sides and not run fire rivers in your home. I would do this in a well ventilated garage or outdoors.

ok thanx. i got a neighboure whos a welder he cud make me un and an uncle whos a carpenter he cud make me an nother bator too. So tat would bring me up to 4 with the toaster bator then the new wooden one which i'll put an iron in will be 5.

Thermostat might not let it stay on will kick off when it reaches the temps, but those wires get really hot really fast so it still could burn. My big old cabinet incubator has heating wires in back and its is on risers with ceramic insulators so it wont burn the wood housing, its not that big of a wire either, a toaster wires probably way nastier, I think at that point I would save up and buy a heating element and the ceramic risers as a set off ebay too.

so how doies the thermostat work i know it cuts of when it reaches the appointed temp but when it dips vbelow then it cuts on how low does it dip?

Thats a rheostat, I think its kind of like a dimmer where you can turn it up and down but it wont adjust for changing room temps on its own, its not a thermostat.

A thermostat will kick off when it reaches a certain temp, then kick back on when the temp starts to drop, how much of a drop depends on the thermostat. My incubators seem to stay with in a couple degrees.

Something like this:
