Can my hen live alone

We have had two silverlace wyandottes for three years - Gertrude and Gladys. Throughout this time they were inseparable. Gladys died two weeks ago. Because Gertrude was broody when Gladys died we were advised to introduce some chicks which we tried but Gertrude just tries to peck them.
Gertrude cried out for Gladys for four days and then crowed like a rooster for three days. She seems very lonely and sad and lets me pick her and snuggles in.
I know chooks need company. She is no longer broody and has become quite territorial. I am at a loss as to what to do to help her.
Does anyone have any suggestions.
