do they ever enjoy human contact or are they more like guineas?
My chickens are like lap dogs, I'm just curious about peafowl as someone locally is selling yearlings & I'm strongly considering getting them.

It all depends on how theyre handled when theyre young. I would always keep my peas in the house, free to do as they please when they were babies. In my opinion & experience i consider them friendlier than a parrot.
Mine would be so fond on me that if they didnt see me in the room, they would fly from room to room looking for me.
Once they grow bigger I move them outside & allow them to roam the yard.
if theyre not on the porch rail tapping the glass or at the sliders..the minute theyd spot me come outside, theyd all come either running or flying..fighting over a spot on my shoulder..and if id pull in the driveway, theyd always greet me. peas are my favorite of all the birds

Guineas are pretty similar too if you raise them indoors & always handle them...mine will sit on my shoulder and preen my hair.

I have a blackshoulder pied peacock thats was hand raise by himself. He will follow anyone around like a puppy dog.

Bad thing during breeding season, he will attack anyone, only peafowl I have that will do this.

He is just so imprint to humans. So i would raise them with other peachicks, and hand raise them.

So i would raise them with other peachicks, and hand raise them.

For sure..raising them with other peachicks so they know how to interract with other peas

Yes much tamer than chickens or rather shows much more personality. I shipped eggs to a friend, she managed to hatch only one, a white. It grew up extremely tame, she could pet and carry it around and it also ran/flew over whenever she called for him.

Deerman's message is a warning though, there is a risk of a "hand raised" male turning aggressive towards people- have heard of this about several males.. not all turn out aggressive though.

Hi,

Just a word of caution. Before getting those yearlings, you are going to have to decide whether you plan to cage them or just let the free range.

If you decide to let them free-range, I would be sure & ask your neighbors first how they are going to feel about having them as visitors and also about the noise.

Fortunately, I have wonderful neighbors because I swear my Indian Blue Trio spends more time at the neighbors than they do here at home.

God Bless,

any animal can turn mean at any point so i think the chance of a male peacock turning aggresive is the same as a regular dog. i wouldnt worry about them being agresive unless they were once wild. personaly i think that having them in a cage and only letting them out a few hours a day would make them more tame rather than just letting them free range. just my opinion and in most places it means nothing but just wanted to let you know.

India blue peacocks being aggresive are very very rare, when you find one its like mine had been imprinted .

Now the greens,or spalding maybe.

Even if not tame, they are not aggresive.

Have had hundreds and only the one thats get aggresive during the breeding season.
