Can Roundup Kill Chickens?

My DH sprayed Scott’s Turfbuilder Weed and Feed on the entire yard this spring. I called the customer service number for Scott’s and was told NOT to let the chickens or other grazing animals on the yard for an entire year!

I was told that they have not done studies regarding Mecoprop-p toxicity to chickens or the effect on eggs, but they have done studies regarding grazing animals and strongly recommend not allowing the chickens back on the yard until next year.

The active ingredient in Roundup is glyphosate. Monsanto suggests that glyphosate is safe for chickens, but I don’t know if they’ve looked at how or if it’s passed through to the eggs. Personally, we won’t be using any weed and feed products anymore. I can live with dandelions!

I'm trying to cultivate more dandelions for the flock, and for myself to eat. Restaurants use them in salads, and they are also used medicinally. It's harder than you might think to keep up a good supply.

I can see the benefit of selecting plants from an eficiency point of view, but it looks too close to genocide from my perspective. Monsanto doesn't only make Roundup, but they also let GMO crops out into the wild, and when they contaminate other fields, Monsanto is known to sue their owners for using the DNA without permission. I hope they really didn't sue as many as I've heard...

Sadly, another beautiful spirit succumbed to the ravages of poisoned glyphosate spraying from my neighbors yard, through my fencing into my coop run. My healthy and happy pets were a joy before they sprayed their poison next door, onto their weeds and grass. Now both of my girls are dead.

Oh, and about the roundup it's been 4+ months since it was sprayed. I highly doubt it's still killing my chickens...

The thing with roundup is it stays in the soil for pretty much forever. So after 4 months it could definitely still be killing your chickens.
