Can someone PLEASE Help me ASAP?? :(

I just took off the bandages and removedd my chick from the sling to change bandages, wash the sling, and give it exercising sp? and my poor baby is worse. She/He looks to be in so much pain and I want my baby to be culled or put down so it's no longer in pain. It's wound is worse, leg is more crooked the foot is more crooked. Still not eating, starting to stop drinking. I live in Austin, Tx. If someone lives near me and has much experiance at culling a chick painlessly or can put it down for me, can you PLEASE help me? I just don't have the heart to do it.. I'm still new at this and I know I'm going to have to learn to do it, but just can't right now. So PLEASE if someone can help me to keep my baby from suffering PLEASE let me know..

I'm SOOO sorry to hear that... If you want it completely painless I would go to the vet and have them put it down.... That's what I do with my birds... I feel it more respectful than breaking there neck... I want them how they were created to lay in the grave at peace as if they had just gone to sleep... And will never wake up

. Hope you find a lovely place to burry her/him... So sad...

I'm so sorry, I know how hard you tried. If it makes it through the night, I'm sure you could find a vet to do it for free. Your local animal control or Humane Society would probably also do it for free.

Thank you, we are going to call our vet on monday morning when it opens to see if they will do it for us as our vet doesn't deal with birds, but still going to ask. They've been our pets vet for MANY MANY years and know us EXTREMELY well

I kept it out of the sling and just put some really soft bedding in there to sleep on.. It's nesting bedding and is as soft as rabbit fur. I didn't put another bandage on either, thought the wound could air out as the bandage stuck to the poor baby's woulnd and bone and caused it to bleed .. I used water to soften up the bandage to remove it and after I did that it came off pretty easy.

You've made a good effort, and this unfortunate outcome is far more painful for you than it's likely to ever be for this chick ... shock normally sets in, and is nature's anesthesia, as it most oftens renders them virtually numb to any sensations.

And, I apologize for increasing your own suffering by answering your question, and asking that you read and consider this entire post.

The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends cervical dislocation, which is manually induced doslocation of the spinal column from the skull, and asphyxiation by carbon dioxide, as the best options.

Errors can occur w/ cervical dislocation, but the use of carbon dioxide first renders the chick unconscious, which allows it to pass on while asleep ... this is by far the most gentle method, and something that anyone can carry out w/o any chance of causing the chick any further suffering.

It would be best to very slowly introduce the CO2 so as to not cause any negative reaction, and to allow an extended period of exposure to insure that the process is entirely completed.

You should perhaps ask someone that isn't so personally involved to do this for you, after all that you've done for your chick.

I could never suffocate a chick. After a few years of hatching and raising chicks, I can now dispatch any sick/injured chicks myself by wrapping in a paper towel and using a sharp hatchet or cleaver. If you cannot do that, I recommend a small, dark, warm place to make the chick as comfortable as possible, and let it pass naturally. The chick's body will shut down system by system which puts it into shock. It'll fall asleep and die. I wish you all the best in making the decision that is best for you and your chick.
