Can someone tell me if this is a rooster?

You have two roosters and I suggest rehoming one. They will mate the hens too much.

I'm just worried because my aunt had 2 roosters, they grew up together and one day the smaller one snapped the reds neck.. they didn't have too many fights either.

It is very rare for that to happen, especially if you watch your roosters for any signs of over-aggression towards each other. The bigger problem is the roosters over-mating the hens.

Looks like your chickens are very happy with their 'redneck' home....after all, aesthetics is for us, not the animals. We were very fortunate that we made a bit of profit when we sold up our old house and moved to our current location so we had money up front to make a really good enclosure for the, then, rabbits. Fully fox and buzzard proofed (our only predator threats). The original plan had been to build another, separate, chicken enclosure, which was equal in size to both rabbit pens put together but as we didn't actually have the chickens at that time, it took lower priority while we sorted other things. Then, by the time we focused on chickens, we had spent all the money on fencing and housing for the goats and alpacas but sadly, two of our bunnies had passed away....so we stole their pen! It means I am having to be VERY careful with my chicken maths as the pen really can't take too many chooks. I have cochin, orps and brahma, two of each, all very large girls, so there will be a limit to how many more I can have. I have hatched some CCLs though, and will be keeping two pullets and a cockerel from them, leaving maybe two final spaces in Spring, for a couple of ex batts....just because it feels so good to rescue them and give them the life they deserve

It sounds like you have a full farm there! That' s so cool! I know, it does feel so amazing to be able to rescue these baby's and give them a nice home! Those pens are so beautiful! They all.muat be ao happy to be living the life! I'm in school to become a Vet technician and I cannot wait to rescue some in need animals! But it's very smart to keep an eye on the numbers because it sure can get overwhelming quickly! I'd love to get some ex batt hens.. there's a factory close by that once o have the set up I want to call and see if they would let me rescue some... Do you usually kill any unwanted roos and have them for supper?

I am going to look for a new home for it now that I know for certain it is a roo.. I'm hoping to find some sort of rooster sanctuary so he can live out his days fooling others into thinking he's a girl!

After being forced to cull seven boys whom I couldn't find homes for, I now only hatch auto sexing or sex linked and cull within three weeks. They then go to our resident buzzards so they are not wasted. I have never eaten a bird I have raised. I don't see anything wrong in it, I just can't do it.....no more than I would eat my cats. My Chooks are solely my pets.... I am egg intolerant too so can't even eat those but hubby sure does love em! Xx

I am the same way! I don't eat the eggs unless they are in something I'm baking. I usually give the eggs away to my friends and they love them. I heard of putting a knife into their mouth and basically slicing their throats is the fastest way to kill them.. when my girls have died the buzzards come to eat them like you do too..

I get them out, one at a time, and give them mealworms and let them relax into nosing around and being typical chicks, then gently sneak up with a sharp pair of scissors and..........they literally don't know anything about it. I genuinely believe it's as stress free and humane as it's possible to be. I tried CO2 and it was OK. I tried dispatching tongs and wasn't happy with those.....too much handling stress. I'm happy (if that's the right word) with this way......as are the buzzards xx

I wish I had a picture of how a rooster looks under uv light vs. a hen. I suspect the rooster feathers we see as subtly different from a hen's are lit up like Clark Griswold's house at Christmas. There is an example here of a male cockatiel's crest as it would look to another bird. Birds have color vision plus uv so they see things we can't:

So, no, you aren't going to sneak a cockerel into any flock's territory unnoticed but that doesn't mean he can't find his place in a flock. I hope you're able to find someone who needs a rooster.
