Can Two Roosters Ever Get Along Well?

They were from eggs that came from a free-ranging mix of breeds. The colorful bird is surely part Araucana and I think Australorp while the white rooster is part white leghorn - you'll notice he has red ear lobes not the usual white of the white leghorn...

We have two giant cochin roosters along with an older...by six months rooster. At first they tussled but now the cochins are learning from the alpha roo. I also have three silkies and two of them turned out to be roos...all raised together with twenty hens. All is fine. They learned their pecking order and behave very well together. I do want to get some more silkie hens and cochin hens come spring.

We got 2 roos by accident and they are getting along well. Although the hens think our silkie roo is invisible, like literally. They push him of the roost when they jump on. Our other Speckled Sussex roo is quite a gentleman. He gives the hens all the treats and usually never has any for himself. So far, no fights. Good luck with yours.

We have several roosters, but two in particular are just inseparable. Our two Faverolles roosters are never very far from one another... it's very strange. They never fight, although occasionally one "dances for the other for a second or two. That's always ignored in a dignified, world-weary sort of way. Almost as if they were British birds, rather than French: "Really, old chap--that old game again? I say, it's MOST boorish of you."

Then they continue taking their turn about the yard. I bet they'd like it if I could fashion little meerschaum pipes for them somehow.

My other roosters don't fight, either, but they will face down with their hackles out like ruffs, and the one who loses the game of, um, chicken, then runs away. I have a lot of room, though. I think the more roosters you have, the more room you have to have.

With my two Faverolles, though, I don't think it would matter if they were cooped up or not. They're real pukka sahibs. I've had other Faverolles roosters that didn't bond like this, though.

Dear Rooster Red and others -

Thanks for responding. It really encourages me that my Buck Buck and Prima will be life-long pals. Rooster Red, your roosters are very handsome! What's with the opposum on your home page?! Was it something you raised from a baby! They are spooky- looking animals. Is is tame!?

One other question - should I be concerned that I have two roosters to six hens?! Is that too much for the girls? Thanks! Ann

It's nice to know that other people are "sweet" on roosters too!

In answer to the last post, all my birds came from a free-ranging flock so they are mixed breeds. I think my white rooster, Buck Buck, is mostly White Rock, but there could be some Araucana in there or white leghorn, and my colorful Prima is certainly part Araucana with ear tufts and all.

Buck Buck does a happy dance every time I walk into the stall and loves when I put my arm around him or pick him up. If I sit down and pat my lap, he jumps up and cuddles - ok, he also tries to mate with my knee, but it's covered in Carhart at this time of year, so "so what!" I love walking into the barn and calling out "Where are my chickens?!" They all crow and call out in the funniest ways. They're a kick! -Ann

I love all the success stories, because I just got 2 young roos and dont want to part with either one.

Ones a 4 month old blue cooper maran roo and the other is 3.5 month old buckeye roo that were raised together. My intention was to only purchase a buckeye roo and hen, to add to my flock of 9 hens, but the maran roo was offered for free and was so handsome, I said yes.

The three of them are inseparable and I hope they stay that way once they mature. Fingers crossed.

I don't know what to do..... I have two roosters a 3 year old silkie and a 9 month old silkie. They are with 17 hens and up to now they've been getting along but recently the younger one is bullying my older Roo. No blood has been shed but my older guy is living in fear. Don't know if the younger one (Willie) will calm down or if I need to find him a new home. Reading some of these post give me hope but really not sure what to do. Playing it by ear for now I guess.
