Where is the injury located. If it is located below the wing and in front of the leg, it is probably a mating wound caused by the tom.We check on our birds throughout the day. We went to check on our four turkeys and seen one was injured. We are not sure how. Could she be ok? What can we do? She’s just over a year old and my 3 year olds attached
Yes that is a mating injury. It is usually caused by too many toms in with too few hens or a tom trying to breed a broody hen that is sitting on a nest. Here’s another image
Mine had an identical injury, I also used blu kote on it and it healed up just fineYes that is a mating injury. It is usually caused by too many toms in with too few hens or a tom trying to breed a broody hen that is sitting on a nest.
I would treat it with Blu-kote and keep her penned separately from the other turkeys.
Yes.Would tractor supply sell bluekote
Turkeys are tougher than people think they are. I am sure that your vet was being overly cautious. I and others have had turkey hens heal from breeding wounds without any interference other than putting Blu-kote on the wound. In some cases, I did not even do that and the turkey healed fine on their own.Isolate her and flush the wound out really well 2x a day and treat her with antibiotics, we had a turkey with a similar injury and this was what the avian vet had us do and she healed up well!
