Can You Bomb-Proof Quail?

I have six corturnix quail in one aviary and 2 like being touched and picked up. The rest is pretty shy and will only eat from my hand. In my other aviary, nobody of the seven enjoys being handled. They don't mind me hanging around them but don't want to be touched. I have spend much time with all of them when they were chicks and still do. But I think it depends on the character, some are more docile than others. I don't think you can get every quail to enjoy being picked up, but if you have a few who are docile, great. Show these around and leave the rest alone or let people only hand feed them.

Yes we tend to do this with our other animals. We always have a select few who are much more tolerable than others that are the go-to's for public interaction. Many thanks for the input

Almost forgot treat all newborn quail as suicidal, also if they become tame watch out under ur feet specially if they start following the kids for treats and the kids are surrounded by them and walk backwards and for doors 🚪 😉 good quail advice lol another thread just reminded me about it

Hi all,

I work at an urban small animal farm and we are looking to introduce some new bird species, particularly game birds like pheasants and quail. We have a large diversity of animals already, and our work mostly coincides with educating the public, specifically children and those with special needs. As such, our animals get handled a lot and have to be tolerant of people. Our chickens and ducks are what we'd consider to be bomb-proof; we can pick them up, carry them around, and can allow children to feed and pet them supervised (the public can't pick up our animals however, only staff to ensure we don't have any accidental droppings or injuries).

We don't have experience with quail yet, but want to know if they can be tolerant in a similar manner. I feel getting some adults might be too risky at first, since we can't determine their tameness from their previous experiences, so I have incubated some eggs myself (we've gone for button quail). They'll be staying home with me until they are old enough to live outside at the farm, so I'm wondering just how far I can teach them in regards to tolerance. There are other animals in my house that they'll be seeing and hearing daily also, I would like to build up their tolerance from birth so that they know that noises and handling is the norm. But I know that quails are very easily spooked.

I want to know if anyone here has hand reared quail, and can let me know if there is such a way to have happy tolerant quails at the farm, or is it just a natural instinct that will keep them distant and frightful? Any input is appreciated.
In my experience with button quail, they bond to whoever handles them most but their instinct takes over when they're around strangers. They also would rather chirp at you and eat from your hands than get held.

Didnt put it there it chirped ran over crawled in my hand and watched me write and sat there the whole page turned grey later ended up giving him to my lil sis who is physically challenged, she begged for him 😆 they spend everyday together happily he started getting orange on his breast and butt his name is hecate, easily hand raised it, but buttons are a indoor pet unless u provide or live in the right temps outside.

Hi, while you're correct it turns out I had actually been duped by the seller, and from my inexperience of different quail breeds having different egg patterns, didn't notice until someone pointed it out for me. I actually have coturnix quail chicks now haha, I thought they were buttons until the day before they hatched.

Oh, well in that case, coturnix quail can be extremely friendly if handled from hatch and I have several that I can let out on the ground for a few minutes a day without them flying off.
