Can you feed dog food to chickens?

My chickens also run to the dog food bowls first thing when I let them out -- as another poster posted -- they check for what's left. sometimes they try to get into the bowl when one of the dogs is still eating so I try to make sure the dogs are done before I let the flock out. It's funny! They just run as fast as they can.

I LOVE the Kent Native. When Kent took the distributorship from Blue Seal around here (New England) I was without my Native for 3 months. My dogs lost conditin and my old girl succombed to the cancer she had been successfully fightintg for 2 years. Now my BS dealer has to special order Native for me (the price went way up too, like 10.00 a bag) and he is very upset about the price he has to charge me. If their food wasn't so good, I wuld find something different than Kent, because they really mad me angry.

My chickens love the Kent Native. So do my cats and believe it or not, my stupid Mini horse. I spilled some on the way to the dog pens (I have to go thru the horse area) and the mini scoffed up about 2 cups of it!

Lets just say this has been an interesting thread for me. I feed my dogs Taste of the Wild which has an extreme amount of protein. I doubt it would be any good for the chickens though as it has no grains in it. But with a cheap dog food that is mainly grains I don't see how it would hurt the chickens.

Oh and I buy my dog food at the local feed store. Nobody else sells it around here.

I'm glad someone posted this as I was wondering about it too. I have two older hens, a 1yr hen, and one who should start laying anytime. My problem is they would rather have the dog food than the layer stuff. They also haven't been laying since June? either that or they are going under the garage.

that's actually quite a good formula for dog food. think about what they would get in nature. if they killed a rabbit or something, they would eat it's stomach contents and get all that good nutrition from the fruits, veggies, and greens! we feed all grain-free because of allergies that one of the cats and one of the dogs have, but rice is a much better grain option than corn or soy.

the chicken would do the same to the rabbit also eating the soft tissue.

You may want to be careful with feading dog food to your chickens. I have read on here someplace that it tends to swell up after being eaten. Not a good chioce.
