Can you get salmonella from chicken poop????

Quote:
There are thousands of types of salmonella bacteria. Salmonella pullorum and galinarum are the two tests that are usually required to move birds from state to state. These two types of salmonella only effect the birds themselves and aren't a problem in humans. The tests are required to prevent disease from spreading between poultry flocks.

Salmonella enteritidis is the type that caused the large egg recall this past summer, and is only one of the types of salmonella that can be very hazardous to humans.

Nearly all animals carry salmonella to some extent, some types are species specific, others can be transferred between species, some may not affect the host species but can be hazardous to other species.

I just want to mention that neoprene gloves are really great for cleaning out the poop.

You can douse them with a little dish soap and wash them outside with the hose- presto! They are clean and your hands never got dirty. Also great for filling waterers in the cold weather.
