Can you identify this snake?

I don't know. My husband is paranoid that if there's a dead snake on the road a mile away, he really thinks it was on it's way here.

Do Not go near anything red yellow and black. By the time I remember the rhyme, I'd probably be wrong anyway.

I guess it wouldn't look like your dead snake, Jan. I didn't know we had rattlers here.
Red on black, venom lack. Red on yellow, kill a fellow. Red on black is a King snake, he eats venomous snakes for breakfast. Red on yellow is a coral snake, he is very very dangerous.

The rattlesnake was unexpected and big. My oldest, smartest chicken sounded the alarm and my sister visiting from out-of-town went to see why she was making all that noise and almost stepped on it. It was right next to the back porch. Scary!

The state park apparently just did a burning this past week so I guess we need to be on the lookout for more critters. Raccoons and foxes and snakes, oh my!

If it comes down to them or my chickens, they have to go.
