Can you please look at these pics?

Since you have the room you might put a buddy in there with her. She'll be happier with a friend as long as she's not getting picked on.

I am not a chicken expert but I'm a former vet tech and have treated a lot of abcesses. Does the enlarged area feel warm / hot to the touch? I second the idea of trying a syringe to see if there is pus inside. If there is, you can lance it. You can buy a sharp scalpel-like thing (sorry I don't know what the drugstores call it) from a drugstore, it will be sterile, then make an ~1/4" slice at the bottom of the enlarged area so that gravity will help drain it. Squeeze the goo out. It will be gross - hold your breath. You can fill a ~5-10 cc syringe with warm soapy water (no needle needed), then squirt some inside to help clean it out. Would be good to put her on antibiotics. Clean many times per day and try to keep the incision open to allow it to drain.

Strange that you should post this because a couple weeks ago we found one of our hens dead with a hole right where your hen is inflamed at. I thought that it looked like she had eaten a widow spider or something. It was very strange

I hope yours gets well soon!

Yikes. You guys have me really scared. Cobrien, thanks for the step-by-step directions. Yes, it's warm to the touch where it's inflamed and does feel like it's fluid-filled. She doesn't like me touching it.

Kittymoma, I thought about giving her a friend but was worried in case it might be contagious. Since it doesn't sound like it is, I'll give her a friend in the morning.

I talked to a vet a couple hours ago and (w/out seeing pics or the bird) he believes that she has pnemonia. I have her on antibiotics but he thinks I'll need to go and find someplace that carries stronger ones.

Anyone had a bird w/ pnemonia before?

Does she even have any respitory symptoms? I guess she could have pnemonia in addition to whatever is causing that lump, but I've never heard of pnemonia causing something like that. It seems more likely that she was bitten or has something stuck in there.

It looks more like a spider bite. IMO... If it is hot to the touch and squishy, heck even hard, it is filled with infection. If she had an illness like pneumonia you would here wheezing when you listened to her lungs, or her sinuses would be gooie. Put her on some penicillin, or amoxicillian if you have any at home. Lance it and see if it drains. I had a bantam hen that had that right under her eye. It took a little while to heal as it was a nasty bite, but now you can hardly tell.

Any time you talk about facial swelling in chickens, you think respiratory. I had a turkey hen that had a swelling there, I believe it was either a wasp sting (found big nest in coop) or a snake bite. (lot of them around) It took a couple of weeks to go down completely, she stayed kind of puffed up for a day or two, but after that, she was fine, appetite returned.
