Can you stun the bird before you cut its throat?

I'm just not that comfortable just cutting its throat; which method is the most humane to kill the chicken? I don't want to chop off the head because its too messy. I tie them upside down on a rack. I'm processing 12 of them on Wednesday. Thanks! Diana

I watched a show called "Kill It, Cook It, Eat It." This episode was about a local meat bird raiser in the UK. They stunned their birds first before cutting their throat. So yes it can be done.

Yeah--I know, but it makes me feel better, and as I have paid for the feed, cared for them since chick-hood, and put up with numerous peck-related scars, I'm going to stun the buggers.

agreed.

if you cut the head off, you don't run the risk of inflicting pain over and over, until you hit it in the right spot. just cut the head off, and not only is it quicker and easier than trying to stun them, it's more humane

if someone were to kill me, i'd rather they just did it quick, rather than hitting me in the head and then killing me

totally agree with this guy. (or girl) no point in hitting the bird twice. it could be alot worse if you miss the right spot.

I had the opportunity to be stunned once upon a time... hard enough to drop me to the floor. I could barely think for a few minutes. IT HURT LIKE F************ h**********

Just because something does not struggle does not mean it does not feel pain.

I used to fish as a kid; ate lots of perch. I didn't hit them on the head. I quickly cut thu the spine at the back of the head. Seemed the quickest. I'm older now, and for the last 20 years I can't kill anything, even spiders cause me regrets!

A quick head off is probably the most humane.

I have 3 Roos I'll be butchering soon well one at a time I want to keep one to breed but I will be slicing the throat. Instead of stunning and chopping the heads off.
