So what have you decided to do? are your still working on rescue?

Hi Miss Lydia,

I am looking to do anything I can to help except I can not care for it at my home, basic city lot in town If I had a farm or anywhere else
I would be a rescue person.
I am willing to help I know reading about them they seem mean They are all so sweet.

Mommy always on guard, trying to rescue you it that would break my heart taking it from it family and its Mom.

I'm so lost, no one in our area to call to help, you would think a rescue team somewhere... so hard to keep ignoring.
I'm 30 miles north of Louisville have been checking, except I'm scared to think someone coming to get it for Supper? not funny but..

Miss Lydia, you say they will all fly away and leave her/him I think it is a her? how have no idea just do.

I see them everyday, that wing no way, it is completely vertical bones sticking out. Maybe if I paid more attention sooner?

Thank you for reply , any all advice/critic is Welcome
Kim

They are all still here, as her wing is so bad and family will fly soon.

Would it be best to wait until after they fly away to rescue it. ?

I thought Black Berry Hill was going to help since she was close to you? and yes if the geese don't stay around in the winter then they will eventually leave her. very sad but it's just natures way of the fittest surviving [she [mother nature] never thought about us humans coming to the rescue] I'd have a plan in place so when they finally leave you all can move in and rescue her. She will most likely die other wise. She has angel wing and can live a normal life with a flock of domesticated geese. That won't be migrating. Did you go to the thread here on BYC of your state and ask for help?

Hi, Kim --- How are the geese?

I can assure you that I DO NOT want this goose for dinner! I PROMISE! I am a vegetarian. Once she comes here to live, I will send you photos. You can come visit if you like.

I don't think it would be a good idea to try to take this goose away from it's parents. They are very protective. I have a book on raising ducks & geese by Storey Publishing that states that a grown goose is capable of breaking a man's arm. I don't know if that is true but Storey is supposedly reliable.

You need to realize that even though this goose cannot fly, if threatened by a predator, he will take to the water to swim away. If we start trying to catch him he WILL feel threatened.

So, how big is that lake? Do you know about how deep it is? Is swimming allowed?

When we rescued the duck, the lake had frozen over but not solid. We had 7 inches of snow. I broke thru the ice twice - once up to just my knees and the second time to my waist. It took FOUR LONG DAYS to catch that duck! I learned alot. Long story.... bottom line: duckie is fine. He has lived here ever since happy as a duck can be. We built a house & predator proof pen for him in the snow in 20 degree temps then in the spring brought home more ducks so he would have buds. And they have our lake to swim in.

My husband is fond of saying that around here the animals are in charge; we just do their bidding.

So, how did we catch the duck? I will write that up soon but it's too late tonight. It basically involves rolls of plastic netting 4 feet tall x 50 feet long to cordon off a corner of the lake which can mean wading to get it in place. It makes the area available to the bird smaller & smaller. And, then we (gently as possible) get a capture net over him. Think giant butterfly net on the end of a 12 feet handle. And, then we have to pick him up and place him in a crate for the ride home.

Do you have two or three friends or family that can help us herd him into the cordoned off area?

Also, I need directions etc. I gave you my phone number in a PM. I would like to come down there soon to just check things out. You are probably a 3 - 4 hour drive for me one way so I need to plan ahead.

We need to be able to put this plan in action as soon as the family flies away. Don't hesitate to call me. Do not count on this thread to keep in touch with me, please.

My main concern is not catching the goose but a neighbor seeing us calling the police. ("Say, Ethel, just what are those people think they are up to? Call 911! They're trying to steal a goose!") I can see it now.

I have actually decided to check into becoming a wildlife rehabilitator so I would have the license or authority or whatever is needed. I will find out what is involved this week and let you know.

Keep an eye on the geese. Do you go over to feed them? Is she comfortable around you?

Take care, Sherilyn :)
