Canadians check in here....

Hi there,
If you are interested in Orpingtons I know someone that has some lovely birds. He shows them and they do quite well, really nice colour on these birds. He is in the Paris area. Let me know if you are interested and I will get in touch for you!

For sure, something to think about!!

A challenge show is a show where clubs compete as teams against other clubs. So our club will bring five birds from each category (standard cock, cockerel, pullets and hens, bantams, pigeons and rabbits) compete against three other clubs. Club with most points at the end of the day wins. So one club may bring a very different variety of say, standards, than our club, but they are all competing against each other. The bird that is the best example of their breed out of that group wins! Sort of confusing but sounds like a lot of fun.
Our club provides food this year, another provides the judge etc. I think it's a nice way to get to know other poultry people! If you are not already, I highly recommend joining your poultry association!

It used to be called the Texas Grill but I think it's Cathy or Caroline's or something like that??    There is a gas station "Gords" right beside it.  We should make a date!!

Are any Canadians from the same area welcome to come? It would be a but of a drive for me but I dont get much of a chance to talk chickens except on this forum.

@ shesinthebarn:

I have been raising chickens for 24 years, I can tell you what I feeds chicks and have had good success with.  Others may have something else to add.  If I get chicks from another source (not hatched myself) I will put some stress aid in the water for a couple days.  I feed medicated chick starter until they are 4-5 weeks old and then I switch them to a grower finisher.  I feed this until they start to lay and then feed a layer ration.  I will start to introduce kitchen scraps, fruits and veggies around the 12 week mark.

Not sure where you get your feed but I go to Settler's Supplies in Sheffield, great people to deal with and very helpful!!!  Can talk more on the 24th :D

Ok, perfect! Does not sound too complicated. Where do you get stress aid? From settlers? I usually use Quick Feeds, but maybe Settlers has more chicken stuff. Quicks is horse heaven, but not so much for poultry.

Any brand preferences? For my horse I am a master feeds fan, but not too sure for chicks...I guess I should ask of there is particular brand to avoid? Sorry for all of the questions! I was at the store today and ended up with more questions than answers.

Oh and I forgot to add I give them scratch grain at around 16 weeks and keep that mixed in with the layer as adults.  Settler's has horse stuff as well but they carry most of the chicken medications, if not Farmers Farmacy and division of Grand Valley Fortifiers in Cambridge carries the rest.

OMG THIS IS SO EXCITING!!!! Out of all of canada all of these people withing a 10 minute radius of me end up hosting a get together type thing!!!!!! I used to go to Texas grill when I was younger for their grilled cheese (delicious yum yum)I have yet to go to Cathy's. But the owners of Gords are my parents good friends!!!!!! I might be able to meet up with all of you!!! I was a member of the local 4H poultry club (with a borrowed bantam hen ahaha) LAST YEAR. NOW I'm waiting for my 5 barred Plymouth Rock bantams to come in on MAY 21!!!!! From the Cambridge TSC. (Wish I had discovered this site before I ordered them ahaha) oh well! <3 <3 this is the coop I will be starting off with and eventually after building my (hopeful huge) coop it will be for my broody. So excited! Thanks for the info on seeds ASWELL!

I live a bit of a ways away but am trying to talk my Hubby into going. It might not happen because I am still nursing my son but my fingers are crossed...

I know. I'm kind of blown away by it too. It was a shock to me when three or four people on this thread said they bought feed at Settler's Supplies, ten minutes south of me. We must have a little hot spot of backyard chicken owners. All business over towards Toronto, all techie up towards Kitchener Waterloo, all industry over to Hamilton, and vinification towards Niagara. But in between looks like its all chickens!! Ha!

JekkaLynn,
Please bring your nurseling! I nursed both of my children openly and uncovered for two years each. Very VERY pro-nursing! Nothing is more beautiful than a mama and baby in the act of nursing, any time, anywhere! I think you will find most on here to be the more "granola" type, I think. It all goes hand in hand, really.

Wow my family gives me grief because he is almost a year and still nurses. It is along drive too and my Hubby into would need to drive me so he is still not sure but I am hoping.
