Canadians check in here....

the 4 are a mix of Rhode reds and Brahma and they are 1 month old. Just picked them up this past weekend and worked like a dog to build them a fancy house. And yes, the coop should have been built first. LOL.

What kind do you have??

The coop seems to always be built at the last minute in a flurry of activity. I have Rhode Island Reds, Plymouth Barred Rocks, Black Sex-Links, Ameracaunas, Cochins and Ridley Bronze turkeys. I really like the heritage breeds; they are more hardy and some have really interesting features. Cochins have feathered feet and are wide in the hips so they are hilarious to watch. I think chickens are like Frito Lays chips...you can't just have one. There's tons of great info on this forum so welcome.

So true

Yes there is a ton of info and it can almost overwhelming sometimes. But this site is well setup and it walks you through step by step. Most of my neighbors have chickens so i have some local moral support.

In the spring i'm hoping to pick up another 6 good egg layers. i'm getting into the whole being self sustainable so i'm really working on building larger and more productive gardens and having chickens just seems to go hand in hand.

Thanks for the welcome.

I find chickens way easier than the gardens lol. We are on the path to self-sustainablility as well. We also raise meat chickens in the summer and recently have been trying our hand at turkeys. Love the turkeys. They are very cool.

Nice to meet you. What does your flock comprise of?

Currently? Nothing :) The coop is almost done. We might have chickens in a few weeks or might wait until spring. It depends on if a contact pans out for us. Where do you get your chickens from usually?

I used to get them from the feed store but I'm not always happy with the stock. I've had success with Diane's chicken paradise? east of Ottawa. Nice variety of heritage breeds. This spring I'm going to Performance in Carrying Place for some.
