Sorry, my daughter almost disowned me for bringing home geese, I would be dead if I had emus! Is it @casportpony that has them?

Surprisingly emus do great in the snow and cold. Just have to provide them a windproof shelter somewhere. Even with the shelter though, they may not bother using it. Mine walk around in a foot or two of snow and act like it’s not there. They also sleep anywhere and don’t care if they get covered in snow.

Hello from south central Alberta!

Bought our 1st seven chicks on May 1st 2024. We now have fifteen chickens, 3 coops and two runs totaling about 1000 sq/feet. I love it so much, I am now exploring the idea building a business selling a heritage breed, or maybe a ornamental breed.

Looking for feedback and advice.
Hi from North Central AB!!
Best advice: walk before you run! Have a couple of Alberta winters with them, see how they do, see how much fun they are to feed and care for in -35. If you are still addicted to the chicken life and they prove to throw good chicks then go hard.
Watch for changes in county rules. They slip new ones in all the time and before you realize it you could have by-law or someone else come marching down your driveway to remove your animals for violations you didn't know you were guilty of because the by-laws were different last year.
This was done in Thorhill not too far from me. The people fought and won but before you do anything check county, provincial and federal bills and by-laws. then when you are up dated on all the ins and outs decide what you are willing to comply with and what you are going to do if you don't want the red tape.
I can't say any more here as we are strongly discouraged from any political discussions which (as much as it pains me) I agree with. if you would like to talk more in depth feel free to PM me.

Blessed be and welcome friend!
