Canadians check in here....

Hello, I'm new to this site. My family recently bought a place in the country ( just outside Dunnville Ontario) and we will be getting some red sex link pullets in a month or so (just have to get the coop ready first) .
Glad to see so many Canadians on here and excited to have a place to find advice on having chickens in Southern Ontario.

Hello and welcome to BYC
There is a lot of very good info on this site and lots of very helpful people.

Hey Canadians; I need your help!! I have one chicken with lice - apparently with all sorts of Government restrictions I can no longer buy Dry Kill or Sevin - or well anything. It seems if you are not a certified farmer you are unable to buy these things.
Any alternative ideas???

Would a dog flea powder work??

I have found DE dust that I will just leave in their coop now. Is there anything else I could be doing?? I want to deal with this before the nice weather comes and the lice start laying eggs!!

Hi and
welcome-byc.gif

I order Ivermectin from Jeffers every few years when needed. It does have a long expiry date which makes it worthwhile. Let me know if you need help with dosage by pm.

Hey, haven't tried any of these on my own chicks yet, but there's a bunch of great ideas on Pinterest! The wood ash that CountryMousette suggested is one I've heard good things about, and there's a recipe here that calls for incorporating garlic powder into your feed, and it works as a a natural repellant. Some folks also suggest panting and using clippings of other fly- and louse-repellant plants like Artemesia Silver Mound, rosemary, basil, and lavender around the coop and in nest boxes. Hope some of that helps, not sure of anything more immediate or hands-on, unfortunately!
