Hello Friends,

We live in Ontario, and have been selling eggs on and off for about seven years, depending on the size of our flock and how much they are laying. I have a couple of questions, if anyone can share some insight, it would be appreciated.

I've been looking online for information on small farm egg sales in Ontario (legalities and such) and I can only find general regulations which seem to apply to large quota/commercial farms. I can't find anything directed towards home sellers, unless we are meant to follow the same regulations as commercial farms.

Does anyone know for sure? We don't grade our eggs, or claim them to be organic. Though it's controversial, we do give our eggs a quick wash (just water) right before they are sold. We don't sell to businesses (restaurants, grocers, etc.) or at the farmers market. It's mainly word of mouth and some social media "advertising" if we are overrun with eggs and need them gone. We do deliver to customers if we happen to be in their area. Is all of this okay?

On a different note, after some insurance issues in a local town (nothing having to do with egg sales, but it got me thinking) I have been wondering what kinds of protections are in place for us if something happened and someone claimed to become ill from our eggs. Do egg sellers have insurance?

I'd love to hear what others are doing, or if we need to be doing something differently. I want to protect my family, and make sure my customers are also safe.

Very good questions.
I'd be interested to hear other people's experiences. :caf
