Canadians- Where did you get your heat lamp from?

So I live out in the boonies, and the nearest big town is 45 mins away. Wal Mart had nothing at all, and the M and R feeds had just the lamp for 30 bucks and it was huge. They didnt carry any lights. The next big town is 1.5 hours away so if I have to go in, I'd like to know which stores will likely carry it. I've found great deals online for heat lamps and bulbs... but they only deliver to the states! *sigh*

Just wanted to know where fellow Canadians found their heat lamps.

Well, I can't help you with what's available in Canada but here's some ideas of where to get them. I don't think my local walmart in the US carries them either. I've found the best prices on them at feed stores like Tractor Supply(national chain in US). The local lumber yards all carry them for a little more... Home Depot, Lowes, Menards. The last place that I use in a pinch(most expensive) is a pet store. They use heat lamps in reptile enclosures to provide them with needed daytime heat. Depends on what your needs are, a standard 100 watt incandescent bulb will put off a decent amount of heat.

I'm in the states also, but I bought a hanging work light at home depot. It has a clamp on it to hang above a work space. Its all metal. The heat part is the bulb, got that at home depot too....they had 2 colors: red or clear. Just thought I'd mention to check in the hardware and automotive sections not necessarily farm supply. I got one that was onsale at Princess Auto, and one at Co-op country store. Any farm supply store should have them though. Might also find one at Canadian tire? Best thing to do is call around before you head into town.

Do you have a Home Hardware near you? I've bought heatlamps (fixture, and bulbs) from them before. Our local Canadian tire also has heat lamp bulbs.

And, as far as local feed store, have you *talked* to them about it or just looked on the shelves? This is not the best time of year for expecting heat lamp bulbs on the shelves -- people'll have bought them for winter use, and they won't have restocked necessarily b/c it is not brooding or lambing (etc) season yet -- but they may very well be able to order one for you. The feedstores around here get a new order from their suppliers once or twice a week so it wouldn't necessarily be a long wait.

Also, in terms of Walmart or Home Depot or any other big box stores, remember that you do not necessarily need a lamp labelled "heat lamp", you just want big wattage. There is really very little performance difference between a white 250w bulb, a red 250w bulb, and a red 250w "heat lamp" bulb. So particularly if you are "in a pinch", any of the above will do. Or even use one or two 125w bulbs, closer to the bedding, as long as that can provide sufficient heat without getting dangerously close to the bedding (which indoors they probably CAN).

I use a couple of 50W red infrared lights (reptile section in a pet store) above the roosts to take the chill off when we really drop at night (below 20 degrees is what I decided) compared to weather on previous days. The girls (12 of them) are comfy under them; roost like they do during the spring or fall. Without them, they are huddled together so tight and on top of each other that I can't even count them without reaching in to feel where the bodies are. I have found that when we go down to zero to 5 degrees F, I fire up the 250w red lamp as 5 birds will choose the warmer 250w and the remaining 7 stay with the 50w series. Since these temps are aberrations, we just deal with these numbers a few nights a year...baring the coming of global cooling, this is not a big deal but I am extra cautious with these lights.

My two 50w reflectors (the lower lip edge) are located 23 inches above the roost.

My 250w reflector is located 33 inches above the roost.

Also, thes pics don't clearly show the clamps are secured by wire and screws, not just clamped. When living in NE, we found less need for supplemental light heating as the temp swings are not so wide and fast as here. I preferred the oil filled heater there when necessary but the coop was built differently too.

What province are you in?
Here in Alberta I buy mine at the local True Value hardware store, but then in my town I buy my animal rx's at the drugstore because we don't have a "feed store". I think it all depends on the owner and who does the ordering, so maybe you can ask them to stock some for you. They can also be found in the bigger UFA stores or Peavey Mart. Sometimes it's a good idea to buy a couple of extra ones because murphys law says they'll burn out during a real cold snap.

I checked our small town Canadian Tire and tehy had the bulb but not fixture. Will try for the bigger CT and maybe they will have fixture. If not, I will bite the bullet and buy the 30 dollar one. I'd rather spend 45 bucks (bulb and taxes) than worry I will order it and it doesnt get here in time!!
