Candeling and hatching diary.

I can only have 4 chickens anyway so if I give some eggs to a naughty broody and she gives up on them it will save me from having to find homes for them. I just thought it would be cute to have little chicks following their mom around and the kids would get a kick out of it.

Hi thought I'd join in on the fun, I'm incubating 7 eggs at the moment ( first time incubating, I don't really no what I'm doing :p) when I candle my eggs they go dark but side of the egg is like air sack likes there's no ch

I could use some cheap and easy brooder ideas... I just went through my calendar and I'm going to need it! Time to pull out or buy lots of rubbermaid tubs...

I found an awesome video on youtube for making your own incubator.
I've bought one on Ebay and it's pretty rubbish, temp fluctuates a lot...
Next time (AND THERE WILL BE A NEXT TIME) I'm going to make one.

Instead of having to lift up the lid to turn every day, I was thinking of sitting them in a rotating tray and having the handle protrude outside the foam box.

Really good video.

sounds like they're about 1 and a half -2 weeks old? If this is what I think it is, this is just the chick on one side of the egg, and the rest is just growing space in egg for him to turn/get into position etc.
If it's really dark, probably means you have dark brown/black chicks. If it is dark and then there is a fine, black ring around outer edges, this means chick may have died.
You can never quite tell what's going on in there. Don't assume any have died, you'll have to wait it out. When you candle/top up water bath, give each egg a quick sniff. Chuck out any that smell like rotting meat. Mine always kinda smell a little like warm plastic from my bator, this is fine :)

Photos would be good, try setting camera on flat surface hands-free, turn off flash and manually adjust focus, then you can use both hands, one for egg and one to hold torch.
