Candeling and hatching diary.

What's the latest you all wait in lockdown? Just curious.

?? what do you mean? How long do you keep lockdown going? I will go as far as 5 Days past there due dates.. So lockdown would be 8 days long.

Now I do take ONE step different, Four days before there due date, I will stop turning my eggs and set them so that the larger end is slightly higher then the smaller end, I don't lock it down. This seems to help with UPSIDE DOWNERS...

Yes, you answered my question, thank you!

Candled this morning, I can't see much of anything, but the veining on the outside edges are undulating like breathing or a heartbeat? This is why I think they're all still alive. Still no pips now.

31 quail hatched today when I left for work there were two and by the time I got home there were 31 eggs I started with 46, 6 were clear 3(2 external pips all with movement at candeling) possibly 5 are a little slow the rest were quitters hard to tell when not sure I want to do eggtopsys on them lol not bad for first quail attempt.

Quail and bantam chicks

Day 23, candled and everyone is alive and literally kicking around. My temps were low in the beginning of this batch so I sort of expected this. I hope I didn't totally ruin this batch too, especially since so many made it to the end.

I had chicks hatch at day 24 and day 25 don't give up.

100 plus eggs going into lock down to night (would do it this morning but have to wait for incubators for hatching to heat back up after they were all cleaned one was used for hatching quail yesterday. Should be up to temp by tonight and I am going to stop and pick up shelf liner today decided to separate the purebred chicks into some baskets I picked up so that I can tell who is who. next batch of eggs next batch after that is a small one and goes into lockdown the following monday. Then I believe my next hatch is not until easter hatch but that will be my biggest one yet. Actually ended up with three more quail chicks last night so that is a total of 34 although one is a cross beak and only has one eye very sad my daughter does not want me to put it down I will try to get pictures tonight. Also have one of chicks from this last weekend that is walking on the back of its knees. So sad but I know I need to toughen up and do the right thing for them anybody have any thoughts?

First, thank you for the encouragement on my eggs! Staying patient the best I can here.

As for your concern- I'm sort of a person that runs a tight ship in some respects. Animal husbandry for me is a big one, and this includes responsibility regarding end of life decisions. These critters depend on you for everything otherwise. Death is just as natural and okay as birth. Just part of life. Wish it wasn't so taboo, otherwise people wouldn't have to ask themselves these sorts of questions.

Has nothing to do with being tough. It has everything to do with doing the right thing for the animal.
