Candeling and hatching diary.

31 quail hatched today when I left for work there were two and by the time I got home there were 31 eggs I started with 46, 6 were clear 3(2 external pips all with movement at candeling) possibly 5 are a little slow the rest were quitters hard to tell when not sure I want to do eggtopsys on them lol not bad for first quail attempt.

Quail and bantam chicks

DANG, LOTS OF BABIES..

Day 23, candled and everyone is alive and literally kicking around. My temps were low in the beginning of this batch so I sort of expected this. I hope I didn't totally ruin this batch too, especially since so many made it to the end.

ANY internally pipps yet??

100 plus eggs going into lock down to night (would do it this morning but have to wait for incubators for hatching to heat back up after they were all cleaned one was used for hatching quail yesterday. Should be up to temp by tonight and I am going to stop and pick up shelf liner today decided to separate the purebred chicks into some baskets I picked up so that I can tell who is who. next batch of eggs next batch after that is a small one and goes into lockdown the following monday. Then I believe my next hatch is not until easter hatch but that will be my biggest one yet. Actually ended up with three more quail chicks last night so that is a total of 34 although one is a cross beak and only has one eye very sad my daughter does not want me to put it down I will try to get pictures tonight. Also have one of chicks from this last weekend that is walking on the back of its knees. So sad but I know I need to toughen up and do the right thing for them anybody have any thoughts?

Give them some Vitamins, for the knees give him some Vitamin B complete, drop a pill in a quart of water. What kind of Quails??

I'm a chance giver, I give all life a chance no matter what there defaults are. to give an example, I have a tailless call duck, he's totally useless, can't breed, can't fly, he really has no purpose but I wouldn't give him up for the world. He falls into mud and can't get up etc. I'm sure anyone else would have end his life, he's a year and half now but the cutest little thing ever....

As long as it's not in pain. I think with ducks it's that simple.

We put our old dog to sleep several years ago when he was losing control of his back legs and bowels. The shame on his face when he couldn't control his own poop and dragged his legs around was enough for us. He was 11 years old, a GSD. He might not have felt much and might not have been in a lot of physical pain, but what kind of life is that at the end for a dog that lived a proud life?

Still miss him... but I think you have to be able to make these decisions without second guessing yourself, it's part of being responsible when you care for animals and take on that responsibility.

No internal pips that I can see. A lot of kicking and wiggling in eggs though from space in the eggs that I can see into, which isn't much.

I'm banking that we're going to go all the way to day 25 here. Every baby in this house is slow! My first daughter was 2 weeks late, my second one was a week and a half late. Everything just bakes a long time in ovens around here.

And more news. Looks like all goose eggs never started developing at all. All are still totally clear from what I can see. Opened up the one with the loose air bubble, was completely clear, no development in that one whatsoever. Nothing ever started. And it looked just like the others before I opened it. I could not see any spot on the yolk regarding fertility. I used a spoon to gently turn the giant yolk to check on the side I wasn't seeing on the top, still saw nothing.

Waste of energy and money. I calibrated this new incubator. Temps have been steady, humidity steady and in normal ranges. The rouen eggs are doing well in there. Not sure what happened.

Upset today about that, otherwise today is a great day so far, LOL.

This is really sweet and a lovely thing to do we had a young cockrail for some reason when we went to feed him his leg was out to the side and hobbling around . He did the same thing as your duck, getting stuck and not being able to get back up, for a while but he just died after a bit and we could not give up on him as short as his life was. I think the same as you all life deserves a chance .
On a happy note , I've got 6 pure silkie eggs on the way on day 3 now so exited already !!!! X

I could use some cheap and easy brooder ideas... I just went through my calendar and I'm going to need it! Time to pull out or buy lots of rubbermaid tubs...

Hi, I use a kiddie plastic swimming pool for the brooder base, and then panels that link (chicken corral) that sit around the inside perimeter of the pool. I have a tripod for the heat lamp. The plastic panels and swim pool clean up super easy outside with scrubber and garden hose. I put screens over the top when they start to fly up. Works for me.

OMG!!!!!!!!! It has begun!!!!!!! I was passing by the hatcher and found this.

He's was resting. Now my dh can see him and he appears to be eating his inner membrane. Anyone ever seen this?
