Hi all- I recently joined this forum (today actually) for a bit of guidance. I have a Silkie hen who is very determined to have chicks. She went broody, and I was given some eggs from a friend who had two hens with successful hatchings within the past month. We figured the eggs were getting fertilized. During candling today, all I could see was a dark floating blob in each egg. I couldn't find a spot that looked like it could be an eye, but after looking at my other hens' eggs (we don't currently have a rooster so they are not fertilized) with a light there did seem to be a difference. The unfertilized eggs looked basically clear. Help! My adorable little Silkie hardly ever gets up and I'd be happy if she had just a chick or two to satisfiy her desire to mother. I need to know if she is wasting her time with this clutch of eggs. Does it sound like we are on the right track?

How many days old are the eggs? Around 4 days you should see some veining in the egg if it is a lighter color egg. By day 7 you should also see movement.

I didn't see any movement as far as I could tell. I'm also wondering if these are not viable eggs if anyone has experience setting newly hatched chicks 2-3 days old under a broody hen who has been sitting? Do you think 2-3 days is too late for chicks to imprint on a hen?
