Okay, so this egg is fresh out of the chicken's butt and I can see no sign of fertility.

Placed in incubator at 1:30 pm

I can see the steam when I blow the photo up bigger!

If they are eggs you care about I would leave them alone, but if you're curious, go ahead and check them.

The room is almost the same temperature as the incubators. There are 7 brooders with lamps. The bators are at 99.5 and the room is not climate controlled so it is darn close.
We have a candle scheduled for another bator anyway. I will check a couple leghorn eggs in newly set one for curiosities sake. White eggs are the easiest to see thru.

I think at 4 hours I could see something...

Egg was set at 9:30. I just looked again (3:10 pm) and there is something there, though not enough to get a picture of.

Photographs from last night's candling. I will spare you from a lengthy explanation if possible..

The first 3 eggs were set at 2:30 pm Aug 1st.
I candled only 5 of 30 and only a couple of those appeared to stand out. I used a low quality cell cam for convenience so maybe you can't see what I saw very clearly.

This is a leghorn egg.. I figured that spot in the top left portion of the photo to be the beginning of an eye. But Then again..

This is a Mottled Java's egg. My Java roo has an extremely high fertilization rate. The yoke is much darker but no veins appearing so far. What is that dark speck?

Here is the Mottled Java's egg again but sideways of course.. There is that speck again.

Last but not least.. The final candle on my other bator with hatch day coming this next tuesday..

These are 2 Mottled Java eggs.
I had to shake the heck out of them so you could see thru them.. Just kidding!!!
There was 25 left from 35 at start. Last night we removed 4 more. So 21 eggs left a last candle.

As far as the premise of my reply, resulted in me feeling candling 3 days after set is too inconclusive and leaves to much up to speculation. Although cracking open the eggs as @casportpony has done would be the conclusive method of conformation of positive fertilization.
My opinions usually turn my replies into dart board. So please take it easy with me..

I discovered some finch eggs that hadn't been incubated and must've recently been laid. It's been very cold here so there's no way they had started to develop. I took one inside where it was dark (usually I just do it in the aviary and the shells are so thin you can see the baby developing) and I could see a little spot when I candled it. Hope you can see it too - it's actually easier to see on a smaller photo so sit back from the screen.

I cracked it open and I'm not sure whether it was fertile or not but I'm assuming it was as it looks like more of a circle than a splotch - it's just such a tiny yolk! The yolk measured 1cm (if that) which according to the conversion table is 0.39 inches.

And hats off to all those people who take photos of eggs when candling - it's not that easy to get the camera to play ball!

I found a cracked egg under a broody, so i brought it in and put some tape on it. Decided I'd throw a few more eggs in with it, to play with early candling. A few from both serama pens, a couple cochin eggs, 3 lav orp eggs and 2 brown eggs from my comet -- for color variety, of course I'm at 36 hours now and i can see some color changes, but no actual veining yet. I use a Mini Mag lite 325 lumens, i believe, with some craft foam taped around the light beam and a hole cut in the foam.


Here's the taped egg. We'll see what happens. I have 3 broodies. This egg was originally under one hen, but i moved it to the other pair of broodies along with a few others that didn't look as far along as some. i know community nest isn't a good idea, but i only had a couple laying at the time, and was trying to pull eggs every few days. I apparently missed some lol


edit to add - I had estimated this egg to be at day 7-10 on August 1st. Moved to the bator on Aug 5th.
