Candling question

Here is a pic of one egg,,5 days. They both look the same.

I also stuck some barnyard eggs under my broody girl last week. Since then I took her to the vet (injured knee- now in 'quiet' box and on celebrex) and another broody took over. Francesca has been in and out of broody all summer and she finally has her chance! She's so happy. Anyway with all the drama here I have no idea what's going on with the eggs, nevermind the fact that I have no idea what I'm doing. I looked last night and I could see veins in a couple of them but the others I wasn't sure. One was a darker mass and the other looked like the yolk was floating around. Plus a couple are dark brown eggs and I can hardly see anything. Will she push them out of the nest if they are bad, as the other poster mentioned? I put them under her Labor Day afternoon, so that makes them 6 days when I checked Sunday night? Should I try again on day 10?

Here is my question.... are you looking at your egg in a completely dark room? It looks like your egg is darker and porus (I'm sure anyone will correct me if I'm wrong) it is going to be harder to see. Are you looking at the *CHICKS are HERE!!!* Egg Candling Pics: Progression Though Incubation post? Here is the link https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=261876 I don't have a super bright flashlight, it's on the dull side to be honest but today I candled all 24 and two obviously were clear so I opened them in the kitchen and one wasn't fertile the other was but it barely started to develop. What are you using to candle, or how are you? I am using a toilet paper roll (I'm so broke don't laugh

) that I cut in half and then cut a crestent moon on one side (to cradle the egg easier) Soooo I have my flashlight standing up and on in a dark room, I put the flat end of the toilet paper roll on the flashlight (fits perfectly) and lay my egg on the roll and it is cradled in there and I can see really good. Now the problem I am having is my Barred rocks are darker than the Delawares but from what I can see in the D's I can see veins. I have a few eggs that are porus like yours and I am not able to see clearly through them but I see something I will not give up on any 'completely' until day 13. Have I helped? I hope so

I used a paper towel holder and a very large flashlight. 1 million candle watt.

Works great.

I removed the eggs and broke them open. There was no sign of anything forming.

Since I still have a broody hen I took 4 of my own eggs and placed them under her. About 50 percent are fertile but they are much easier to look through. Golden comets ,australorpes and a silver sebright rooster. (what a mix)

I wish there was a way to see if one has a fertile egg.

without breaking it.

And yes you did help,,this time I will wait a little longer since I am a greenhorn, but I dont think I was wrong this time.

I use a mini maglight. Its has a LED bulb. Very bright. I just cup my hand around the light and twirl the egg slowly on top. Its works very good.

By day 14 you will know for sure which eggs are growing. The egg will get opaque, and the air cell will increase. When I was learning how to candle I always broke open any eggs that I thought were culls. Its a great way to learn. After a few hatches you'll be a pro.
